Jannik Sinner made history as he becomes the first Italian to win the US Open after defeating America’s Taylor Fritz in the final. The 23-year-old cruised to a straight-set victory to claim his second Grand Slam of the year.

From the first serve, Sinner displayed exceptional control and precision, overpowering his opponent with powerful groundstrokes and sharp serves. He broke Fritz at regular intervals didn’t give his opponent any grip on the game and took the match fairly comfortably by 6-3, 6-4, 7-5.

In addition to being the first Italian man to win this championship, Sinner is only the fourth man to claim both the Australian and US Open titles in the same year since both tournaments transitioned to hard courts in 1988.

“It means so much because the last period of my career was really not easy,” said Sinner. “There is my team who supports me each day, the people who are close to me. I love tennis, I practice a lot for this kind of stage. I also realize that there is a life. I would like to dedicate this title to my aunt because she is really not feeling well health-wise. I don’t know how much [longer] I still have her in my life. It’s so nice that I can share positive moments still with her.”

Sinner had come into the tournament on the back of testing positive for a banned substance. He, however, escaped the ban as the ATP’s appeal was successful as ITIA revoked his provisional suspensions. Later, the  Sport Resolutions (which oversees the doping cases) stated “no fault or negligence” for two of Sinner’s cases, further proving his innocence.

On the other hand, Fritz was visually disappointed after the loss and thanked the spectators for the overwhelming support throughout the tournament. “I know we have been waiting for a champion for a long time, so I’m sorry I couldn’t get it done this time,” said Fritz. “I’m going to keep working and hopefully I will get in the next time.”

How many Grand Slams has Jannik Sinner won?

Sinner was the number 1 ranked ATP player coming into the US Open. He won the first Grand Slam of his career earlier in the year, winning the Australian Open by beating Daniil Medvedev in the final. With a win in the US Open, he becomes a two-time Grand Slam winner.

The 23-year-old also made the last four of the French Open and the quarter-finals of Wimbledon this season.
