French Open Day 9 Recap: Djokovic Reaches Quarters, Medvedev Crashes Out, Sabalenka Through
Novak Djokovic, Alexander Zverev, Casper Ruud progressed from fourth-round action on Monday as the final 8 lineup is set at the 2024 French Open.
Novak Djokovic and Francisco Cerundolo played a 5 set classic and despite a knee issue, the World no. 1 emerged victorious 6-1, 5-7, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3. Fourth seed Alexander Zverev also needed five sets to beat Holger Rune 4-6, 6-1, 5-7, 7-6, 6-2. Alex de Minaur upsetted 3rd seed Daniil Medvedev beating the Russian 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, 6-3 and Casper Ruud defeated Taylor Fritz 7-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.
In Men’s double Petros Tsitsipas and Stefanos Tsitsipas beat 4th seed pair of Ivan Dodig and
Austin Krajicek 4-6, 7-5, 3-6 in second round.
In the Women’s matches, World number four Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan eased past Ukraine’s Elena Svitolina 6-4 6-3. Italy’s Jasmine Paolini qualified for her first ever grand slam quarter final beating Russian Elina Avanesyan 4-6, 6-0, 6-1. World number two Aryna Sabalenka needed just over an hour to beat American Emma Navarro 6-2, 6-3. Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva beat Varvara Gracheva in striaght sets 7-5, 6-2 becoming the youngest player to reach the women’s quarterfinals at the Rolland-Garros since 2005.
In the Women’s doubles, 5th seed Coco Gauff and Katerina Siniakova defeated Czech duo Miriam Kolodziejova and Anna Siskova 6-1, 6-2.
French Open Day 10 Preview:
In arguably the most anticipated clash at French Open 2024, Carlos Alcaraz and Stefanos Tsitsipas are all set to light up the Rolland-Garros at Court Philippe-Chatrier. Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner will play Grigor Dimitrov. In the Men’s doubles Tomas Machac and Zhizhen Zhang will face Argentinian pair of Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni in Round 3.
Defending champion Iga Swiatek will face Marketa Vondrousova and 3rd seed Coco Gauff will play 8th Ons Jabeur. Coco Gauff will also be involved in Women’s doubles when she will pair up with
