French Open Day 4 Recap: Swiatek Survives Osaka Scare, Gauff Continues to Impress and Alcaraz Wins Marathon Battle

Day 4 of 2024 French Open saw the commencement of the second round matches with the likes of Alcaraz, Swiatek and Jannick Sinner all in action. Due to bad weather in Paris, a number of games were postponed.

In the Men’s singles, Carlos Alcaraz had a tough battle against Jesper de Jong with the Spaniard winning 6-3, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2. Sixth seed Andrey Rublev defeated Pedro Martinez 6-3, 6-4, 6-3. In the night session Jannik Sinner overcame Richard Gasquet in straight sets 6-4, 6-2, 6-4. Stanislas Wawrinka bowed out in the second round losing to Russian Pavel Kotov 7-6, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6. Stefanos Tstisipas had a prolonged battle against Daniel Altmaier but the Greek emerged victorious 6-3, 6-2, 6-7, 6-4. 

In the Women’s division Iga Swiatek beat Naomi Osaka 7-6, 1-6, 7-5 in a thrilling encounter. World no. 3 Coco Gauff defeated Tamara Zidansek, 6-3, 6-4. America’s Sofia Kenin saw off home favorite Caroline Garcia 6-3, 6-3 and Tunisian Ons Jabeur beat Colombia’s Camila Osorio 6-3, 6-1, 6-3.

Day 5 Preview:

There will be a total of 16 second round matches on Day 5 of the 2024 French Open. Reigning men’s singles champion Novak Djokovic will face Roberto Carballes Baena in their second round clash at Court Philippe Chatrier.

Local hero Gael Monfils will play Lorenzo Musetti at the same venue. 4th seed Alexander Zverev faces David Goffin at Court Suzanne Lenglen and Fabian Marozsan faces Grigor Dimitrov in court no. 14.

In the women’s matches, 2nd seed Aryna Sabalenka will face Moyuka Uchijima of Japan. 4th seed Elena Rybakina takes on Arantxa Rus and Victoria Azarenka will play Mirra Andreeva.
