Tottenham Hotspur Season Preview 2024/25 Top 4? A Trophy? What Will Ange Postecoglou Achieve This Season?

When Ange Postecoglou was announced as the new Tottenham manager, there were a lot of questions marks raised over his appointment. Fast forward a year and things have taken a turn for good as the Australian’s style of play has earned him huge praise among the Tottenham faithful.

Under Postecoglou, Tottenham got off to a flying start in the league and scored goals for fun. They were leading the league in October but an absolutely disastrous game at home to Chelsea, in which the Spurs were reduced to 9 men plus Micky Van De Ven and James Maddison got injured, turned their season upside down. Amid growing injury concerns, Spurs found it difficult to cope with the fixture pileup in winter and eventually finished just outside the top 4.

The Lilywhites were less than convincing in the domestic cups losing to Fulham in the second round of the Carabao Cup and to Sheffield United in the FA Cup 5th round.

How is Tottenham’s squad shaping up ahead of the new season?

Tottenham have been left somewhat frustrated this summer as their two primary targets Ivan Toney and Eberechi Eze are still at their respective clubs with no advancement in the talks. However, Spurs have announced the arrival of Dominic Solanke from Bournemouth in the hope of finding the back of the net regularly, something Richarlison failed to do last season.

Tottenham also signed promising youngster Archie Gray from Leeds United. The 18-year-old midfielder is versatile on the football pitch and can slot into the right-back position if needed. Gray impressed in the pre-season starting all three matches so far while playing in an unfamiliar center-back position.

Another youngster Lucas Bergvall, who was signed by Tottenham last season but joined the team this season, also impressed in the pre-season with his ability to run with the ball and find key passes.

Emerson Royal is set to join Pierre-Emile Højbjerg in the departures of Tottenham this season. Højbjerg has joined Marseille on loan with Grey expected to fill in for the Danish midfielder and Royal is expected to join AC Milan in the coming days with loanee return Djed Spence the replacement for the Brazilian.

Tottenham PL expectations for the coming season

Ange Postocoglou would love to replicate the start they had last season. Known for his attacking style of play, Postocoglou will hope that new signing Solanke will find his Bournemouth form at Tottenham and start banging in goals regularly. The squad has a good overall balance but Postocoglou will look to strengthen the full-back positions before the transfer window shuts.

The rival clubs like Manchester United and Aston Villa have also done some good business this season. They have invested heavily in their squads this summer and will come into the new season as much more stable sides.

As the chasing pack will look to bridge the gap between themselves and the top 2 of Man City and Arsenal, they will also be involved in the battle to finish in the top 4 and Tottenham is again expected to be in the scrap of the top 4 finish this season.

Can Tottenham break their trophy jinx?

Tottenham last tasted success in a major competition in 2008 when they lifted the EFL Cup. As the wait for silverware enters the 16th season, Tottenham will start another season in the hope of winning a major trophy.

Realistically, the Premier League trophy would be too much to achieve for Tottenham at the moment as the club is still trying to find the perfect squad to challenge the likes of Man City and Arsenal at the summit of the table. This leaves Tottenham having to set sights on the domestic cup competitions.

Tottenham have been accused of not taking the domestic cup competitions, especially the Carabao Cup, seriously in recent years. This has left Spurs fans frustrated as the competition is seen as a major chance of securing a trophy for the club. This season, Postecoglou will be hopeful to change that and win one of the two domestic cups to end the trophy drought.

Tottenham will also be in Europa League action this season and will be one of the favorites to win the competition. The changes in the UEFA competitions mean that Tottenham will not have to worry about the heavyweights from the Champions League dropping into the Europa League and can fancy themselves to lift their first European trophy since 1984.
