Premier League Recap: Manchester City Stay Top, Chelsea Finding Their Feet and Aston Villa Continue to Impress

After a scintillating weekend of Premier League football, Manchester City remains at the top of the league despite Arsenal’s heroics with 10 men at the Etihad. Liverpool got back to the winning ways while Fulham down Newcastle at home.

Man City snatch a late point against Arsenal; Chelsea continue to impress

Manchester City and Arsenal shared the spoils in a thrilling 2-2 draw at the Etihad Stadium. Erling Haaland opened the scoring for City, but Riccardo Calafiori quickly leveled for the visitors, with Gabriel then putting the visitors ahead. John Stones rescued a point for City with a last-minute goal, sending them to the top of the Premier League. The game also saw Leandro Trossard controversially sent off at the cusp of halftime for kicking the ball away.

With this draw, both sides remain unbeaten in the league with Cityzens at the top with 13 points from 5 games. Arsenal sit fourth with 3 wins and 2 draws to their name.

Elsewhere, Chelsea continued their strong start to the season with a 3-0 derby win against West Ham at the London Stadium. A brace from Nicolas Jackson in the first half followed by a 2nd half strike from Cole Palmer made sure the Blues continue their good start to the season

Liverpool back to winning ways; Aston Villa come from behind to beat Wolves

Liverpool got back to the winning ways with a comfortable 3-0 win over Bournemouth. Luiz Diaz starred in the show with a brace and Darwin Nunez also got in the act with a beautifully curled shot in the 37th minute to give the Reds all 3 points.

Aston came from behind to beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-1. Defender Ezri Konsa scored only his second goal since 2021, giving Villa the lead in the 88th minute as Unai Emery’s side completed a second consecutive comeback win. Earlier, Ollie Watkins equalized Matheus Cunha’s first-half goal for the visitors, before Jhon Duran came off the bench to score his fourth goal, sealing a 3-1 triumph.

Tottenham also got back to the winning ways, defeating Brentford at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. After going behind in the very first minute of the game, Spurs reacted quickly thanks to Dominic Solanke’s first goal of his Tottenham career. Brennan Johnson and James Maddison rounded off a comfortable afternoon for the home side, giving them a 3-1 win.

Fulham hand Newcastle their first loss of the season; Man United held by Palace

Newcastle United’s hopes of reaching the top of the Premier League were dashed as their unbeaten run ended with a 3-1 defeat at Fulham. The hosts took control early, going 2-0 up by halftime after a commanding performance in the Craven Cottage sunshine. Raul Jimenez opened the scoring with a superb touch and finish. Emile Smith-Rowe doubled their advantage after a neat link-up play with Alex Iwobi.

Harvey Barnes pulled one back for Newcastle early in the 2nd half but Reiss Nelson’s stoppage-time goal ensured Newcastle suffered their first defeat of the season.

Manchester United and Crystal Palace played a 0-0 draw at Selhurst Park. United appeared determined to maintain their momentum from the midweek 7-0 win over Barnsley and could have taken the lead within the first 15 minutes if not for Henderson’s heroics.

The Palace goalkeeper brilliantly denied Garnacho after a clever pass from Joshua Zirkzee, then followed up with crucial saves against Matthijs de Ligt’s header and a near-post strike from Martínez in quick succession, as Palace’s defense struggled to stay alert. Both sides failed to convert their chances in the second and had to remain content with a point.

Brighton and Hove Albion played an entertaining 2-2 draw against Nottingham Forest.

Everton and Southampton get off the mark

Everton and Southampton got themselves off the mark for the season with both earning a hard-fought draw against their opponents. Everton’s search for their first Premier League victory of the season continued as they were held to a 1-1 draw by newly promoted Leicester City on Saturday. Iliman Ndiaye’s first-half goal gave the Toffees hope, but Stephy Mavididi’s equalizer for the Foxes ensured the points were shared, leaving Everton still without a win.

Southampton suffered a heartbreak against Ipswich Town. After taking the lead with an early goal from 18-year-old Tyler Dibling, they squandered multiple chances to extend their advantage, allowing Sam Morsy to level the score for the visitors with virtually the last kick of the game to snatch a point from Saint Mary’s.
