The new Champions League season kicked off with plenty of goals and thrilling action, setting the stage for an exciting campaign ahead. Defending champions Real Madrid left it late to see off Stuttgart while Bayern Munich hit 9 past toothless Dynamo Zagreb.
Let us take a look at all of Tuesday’s results in detail.
Bayern Munich 9-2 Dinamo Zagreb
Bayern Munich made their intentions clear in this season’s Champions League, hammering Dinamo Zagreb 9-2 in their opening fixture at the Allianz Arena. Harry Kane netted four goals, with three coming from the penalty spot. Michael Olize scored twice in his Champions League debut, while Raphael Guerreiro, Leroy Sane, and Leon Goretzka also found the back of the net for the home side.
Dinamo, trailing 3-0 at halftime, quickly scored twice in the opening minutes of the second half through Bruno Petkovic and Takuya Ogiwara, putting a scare into the hosts. However, Bayern responded with six goals from the 57th minute onward to take all three points.
Young Boys 0-3 Aston Villa
Aston Villa got off to a winning start in their first-ever match in the modern Champions League, 41 years with a comfortable 3-0 win over Swiss side Young Boys in Bern. Youri Tielemans and Jacob Ramsey netted in the first half for the Villians, with Amadou Onana sealing the victory with a late goal.
AC Milan 1-3 Liverpool
Liverpool celebrated their return to Europe’s elite by overturning a deficit to secure a 3-1 victory against seven-time champions AC Milan at San Siro in Italy.
Christian Pulisic put the hosts ahead early, but Ibrahima Konate leveled the score before Virgil van Dijk’s header gave Liverpool the lead just before halftime. Dominik Szoboszlai sealed the win for the visitors to seal the 3 points for Arne Slot’s men. The Reds dominated the game after going behind early, putting behind their weekend’s disappointment of losing to Nottingham Forest.
Real Madrid 3-1 VfB Stuttgart
Real Madrid started their title defense with a 3-1 win over Stuttgart at the Santiago Bernabeu. Kylian Mbappe made an immediate impact in his Champions League debut for Real, scoring the opening goal shortly after halftime. Deniz Undav leveled the score midway through the second half for a Stuttgart team making their first Champions League appearance since 2010.
Juventus 3-1 PSV Eindhoven
Juventus got off to a winning start in their Champions League campaign, winning 3-1 against Dutch side PSV at Turin. Kenan Yildiz opened the scoring for the hosts before Weston McKennie scored second to put the Old Lady 2-0 ahead at halftime.
Nicolas Gonzalez put the game beyond the reach of PSV, adding a third just after the restart. Ismael Saibari pulled one back for the visitors late in the game but it was only a mere consolation in a night to forget for the reigning Eredivisie champions.
Sporting 2-0 Lille
Portuguese champions Sporting secured a 2-0 home victory over Lille, with Swedish striker Viktor Gyoekeres scoring first to put the hosts in front. After going behind, Lille were down to 10 men as England international Angel Gomes received a second yellow card for tripping Gyokeres, having been booked earlier for a push on Francisco Trincao.
The home side took advantage of the numbers advantage, scoring a second goal thanks to a superb long-range effort into the top-right corner of Zeno Debast.
