Who Are the British Drivers to Have Won the British Grand Prix?
Formula returns to the Home of Racing, Silverstone this weekend with three British drivers set to take part in their home grand prix.
Ahead of the weekend’s action, let us take a look at the British drivers who have won the British Grand Prix.
Lewis Hamilton – 8 wins
Unsurprisingly, the seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton is leading the list with eight British Grand Prix wins to his name. He won his home races in 2008, 2014-17, 2019-21 seasons.

Between 2014 and 2017, he won 4 consecutive British Grand Prix which resulted in him tying Jim Clark and Alain Prost for the most wins at the event. His most recent win came in the 2021 season, when he famously touched with Max Verstappen in the opening lap sending the Dutchman into the barriers at Copse corner.
Jim Clark – 5 wins
Jim Clark won 5 British Grand Prix in 1962-65, 1967. In 1962 the British Grand Prix was held in the old Aintree circuit where he won by a record 52 seconds. His third win came at Brands Hatch.
Clark was the first driver to win four consecutive British GPs. All of those wins came from Clark starting in the pole position.
Nigel Mansell – 4 wins
Nigel Mansell won four British Grand Prix in Nigel in 1986-87, 1991-92. Mansell retired from three of his first five British races. In 1986 he won his first home race at the Brands Hatch.

But when Silverstone became the permanent venue for the British GP Mansell’s luck at his home races changed winning the race in 1987. He then famously won in 1991 after enduring a long battle with Ayrton Senna and again won the following year in 1992.
David Coulthard – 2 wins
David Coulthard won two times at the British GP in 1999 and 2000. David Coulthard joined F1 after the tragic death of Ayrton Senna.
While driving for McLaren, Coulthard beat his teammate and double-world champion Hakkinen twice in two years at the British GP. He underlined his consistency and ability to win from behind in both races but never really reached the championship-winning level before retiring in 2008.
Jackie Stewart – 2 wins
Jackie Stewart won the British GP two times in 1969 and 1971. The three-time F1 World Champion won his first home race in 1969, the season in which he also clinched his first F1 title.

Stewart followed that up with another victory in 1971. Starting from second he claimed the lead in the fourth lap of the race and disappeared from his rivals to claim his second win at his home track.
Stirling Moss – 2 wins
Stirling Moss won two British Grand Prix way back in 1955 and 1957. In 1955 he became the first British driver to win his home race and it was also the first F1 triumph of his career. He won from pole position beating his teammate Juan Manuel Fangio to the line.
Moss won his second home race in 1957 which was a much easier win as compared to his first win two years earlier.
Johnny Herbert – 1 win

Johnny Herbert has three F1 race wins to his name, the first of which came in his home Grand Prix in 1995. In a very close race, he managed to hold on to first position keeping runner-up Jean Alesi at bay in the final laps.
Damon Hill – 1 win
Damon Hill won his home grand prix in 1994. Schumacher had started from second position in the race but the German earned a 5-second penalty for overtaking Hill, who started from pole, in the formation lap.
Hill consolidated his first place when Schumacher was shown a black flag in the 27th lap for not serving his penalty and was eventually disqualified from the race.
John Watson – 1 win
John Watson claimed his only British GP victory in 1981. He was also on the podium in his home race two times – in 1976 and 1978.

He had his share of luck in 1981 when race leader Alain Prost retired from first position due to engine failure. Rene Arnoux, his teammate also suffered the same faith later in the race, handing the win to John Watson.
James Hunt – 1 win
James Hunt’s home race victory came in his championship-winning season of 1976. However, he was later disqualified from the race as he was not on the circuit when the red flag was waved.
In the following year, he redeemed himself by winning the British 1977 GP edition held at Silverstone. He initially started from pole position in the race but dropped down to 4th. He came fighting back to regain the lead of the race and win his first and only British Grand Prix
Peter Collins – 1 win
Peter Collins claimed his victory in the British Grand Prix in 1958. Despite starting in 6th position, Collins made a blistering start making his way to the first position in the very first lap.

The home favorite never looked back as he controlled the pace of the race and claimed his only win in the British Grand Prix.
Tony Brooks – 1 win
Tony Brooks won the British Grand Prix in 1957. He won a total of six GPs in his career and was the runner-up in the 1959 F1 World Championship.
Brooks’ next best finish in his home GP came in 1960 where he finished fifth in the race. He ended up retiring from his F1 career a year later in 1961.
