Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe Set Up All-American Semi Final Clash; Emma Navarro Also Through: US Open Day 9 Review
Day 9 of the US Open marked the beginning of the quarter-final matches at the Flushing Meadows. Home heroes Taylor Fritz, Frances Tiafoe, and Emma Navarro booked their places in the semi-finals as they look to claim Grand Slam glory on their home turf.
Let us take a look at day 9 results in detail.
Men’s Results
American 12th seed Taylor Fritz of the United States upset German 4th Alexander Zverev 7-6 (2), 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3). It was a rollercoaster of a match, as both players took control at crucial moments but the American’s grit and tenacity took him over the line as the home fans roared him on. With this win, the 26-year-old has qualified for his first-ever Grand Slam semi-final.
“I feel amazing, I’ve had a lot of looks in quarterfinals over the past couple of years, today just felt different,” he said on the court post-match. “I really felt like it was my time to take it a step further and it was only fitting to do it at the Open in front of this crowd.”
In the other men’s quarter-final match, Frances Tiafoe beat Gregor Dimitrov 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 4-1. Dimitrov was injured in the fourth set and had to abandon the match at 4-1 in the fourth set.
This will be the American’s 2nd US semi-final appearance in three years and will now face fellow American Taylor Fritz in the first all-American semifinal clash since Andre Agassi and Robby Ginepri in 2005 and will guarantee a first American men’s Grand Slam singles finalist since Andy Roddick at Wimbledon in 2009.
Women’s Results
In the women’s quarter-final, Emma Navarro of the United States defeated Paula Badosa 6-2, 7-5 to book her place in the semi-final. The 13th-ranked American, who eliminated defending champion Coco Gauff in the fourth round, secured victory after coming back from a 5-1 deficit in the second set.
“Semi-finals baby. I’m ready to rock.” Navarro said after the match.
In the other quarter-final of the day, Aryna Sabalenka comfortably saw off China’s Zheng Qinwen 6-1, 6-2.
