French Open Day 5 Recap: Djokovic Eases Through, Daniel Collins and Azarenka Crash Out in Upsets
Day 5 of 2024 French open saw many big names like Novak Djokovic, Daniil Medvedev and Aryna Sabalenka cruise through to the third round while some notable names like Victoria Azarenka, Gael Monfils, and Daniel Collins having to pack their bags.
Novak Djokovic again needed only three sets to advance as he defeated Roberto Carballes Baena 6-4, 6-1, 6-2. Daniil Medvedev’s opponent Miomir Kecmanovic was injured midway in the second set. The Serbian couldn’t continue handing the victory to World no 5 6-1, 5-0. Alexander Zverev, after seeing off Nadal in the first round, beat David Goffin in the second winning 7-6, 6-2, 6-2 and Grigor Dimitrov defeated Fabian Marozsan 6-0, 6-3, 6-4.
18th seed Karen Khachanov blew a two set advantage against Jozef Kovalik losing 6-4, 6-4, 4-6, 3-6, 4-6. Home favorite Gael Monfils lost 5-7, 1-6, 4-6 against Lorenzo Musetti. Tommy Paul blew away Italian veteran Fabio Fognini 6-1, 6-0, 6-2.
In the Women’s matches, World no 2 Aryna Sabalenka defeated Japanese qualifier Moyuka Uchijima in striaght sets 6-2, 6-2. World No. 4 Elena Rybakina also booked her ticket into the third round beating Arantxa Rus 6-3, 6-4. 2017 French open champion Jelena Ostapenko crashed out losing to Clara Tauson 6-7, 6-4, 3-6. Victoria Azarenka was other big name to exit the tournament in the second round as she lost to Mirra Andreeva 3-6, 6-3, 5-7. Daniel Collins was shown door by Olga Danilovic losing 7-6, 5-7, 4-6.
French Open Day 6 Preview:
Day 6 will mark the start of third round matches at Roland-Garros with World No. 2 Jannik Sinner back in action against Pavel Kotov at Philippe-Chatrier. Carlos Alcaraz will play in the night session at the same venue against Sebastian Korda. Stefanos Tsitsipas will face Chinese Zhizhen Zhang at Court Suzanne-Lenglen. Andy Murray will be back in action in Men’s doubles when he pairs up with fellow Brit Dan Evans against Seyboth Wilds and Sebastian Baez.
World no 1 Iga Świątek will play Marie Bouzková at Philippe-Chatrier. American Sofia Kenin will face Clara Tauson in their round 3 clash and Coco Gauff set clash with Dayana Yastremska.
