The Olympic Games are set to begin in Paris on 26 July 2024 with some of the world’s best athletes set to light up the event. An estimated 10,500 participants are ready to battle it out for a place on the podium.
The USA will again be fighting at the top end of the medal tally table winning a total of 113 medals including 39 golds at the Tokyo Olympics. With just over a month until the start of the marquee event, we take a look at the US Olympians who have won the most gold medals at the Olympics.
Michael Phelps: 23 golds (28 total) – Swimming
Michael Phelps has won the most gold medals and most total medals than any other athlete in the world. He also holds a record of winning the most golds at a single Olympic games, winning 8 in Beijing 2008.
Phelps set a total of 39 world records during his career, out of which 4 remain although he retired six years ago.

Mark Spitz: 9 gold (11 total) – Swimming
Mark Spitz became the first athlete to win seven gold medals in a single Games at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. This record stood for an incredible 36 years and was eventually broken by Michael Phelps in 2008.
In 1983, he was inducted into the US Olympics Hall of Fame. His motto “Swimming isn’t everything, winning is.” is still the driving force for many swimmers in today’s generation.
Carl Lewis: 9 gold (10 total) – Track & Field
Out of his 9 gold medals, he won 4 at the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics in the 100-meter, 200-meter, long jump, and 4×100-meter relay.
He was the first to achieve the feat in track and field events since Jesse Owens at the 1936 Berlin Summer Games. Lewis also appeared in movies and television series often portraying himself.

Jenny Thompson: 8 gold (12 total) – Swimming
Jenny Thompson has won more gold medals than any other woman at the Olympics and the most overall medals in swimming than any other woman.
She mostly participated in the relay events where she won all her gold medals. Her only medals in individual events came in Barcelona in 1992 (silver) and Sydney in 2000 (bronze).
Matt Biondi: 8 gold (11 total) – Swimming
Biondi won a record 7 medals in swimming in the 1988 Seoul games, 5 of which were golds. His first Olympic appearance came in the 1984 games in Los Angeles where he won the gold medal in the 4 × 100-meter freestyle.
He was named the Sportsman of the Year by the United States Olympic Committee and America’s Male Athlete of the Year in 1988.

Ray Ewry: 8 gold (8 total) – Track & Field
Ray Ewry was paralyzed by polio in childhood. However, that did not stop him from becoming one of the most decorated Olympians in the world.
In the 1900 Paris Summer Olympics and 1904 St. Louis Summer Olympics, Ewry won three gold medals at both events. He later joined the New York Athletic Club and helped to win 15 U.S. amateur track championships.
Allyson Felix: 7 gold (11 total) – Track & Field
Allyson Felix is often regarded as the face of US Track and Field teams. Since the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics, she has led the United States to four straight gold medals in the 4×400-meter relay.

In London 2012 Olympics she won an individual gold in the 200 meters.
