Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho were both left out of Manchester United’s squad for Sunday’s Premier League clash against Manchester City. After the game, manager Ruben Amorim addressed his decision to exclude the pair.

Manchester United staged a remarkable comeback to secure a 2-1 victory over Manchester City in a thrilling Premier League derby on Sunday, with Bruno Fernandes and Amad Diallo delivering the decisive goals. Manager Ruben Amorim’s decision to leave Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho out of the squad for the crucial clash raised eyebrows.

Rashford, whose potential departure from the club has been a topic of speculation, has struggled for form recently, as has Garnacho. Both players trained on Sunday morning but were excluded from the matchday squad. Rashford, who had previously been dropped by Erik ten Hag for oversleeping and missing a team meeting, also faced criticism for attending a party after United’s 3-0 loss to City, adding to the controversy surrounding his omission.

“It’s important to say why: it was not a disciplinary thing,” Amorim told a postmatch news conference. “Next week, next game, new life, they are fighting for their places. Everything is important in our context at the beginning of something when we want to change a lot of things, when people in our club are losing their jobs we have to set the standards really high and for that, they have to fight for a place in the team.”

“For me it’s important, the performance in training, the performance in games, the way you dress, the way you eat, the way you engage with teammates, the way you push your teammates. Today the team proved we can leave anyone out of the squad and manage to win if you play together. If it was disciplinary, I would say that here and it will be a bigger problem but was not that.”

Manchester United triumphed at the Etihad Stadium with a dramatic late comeback, overturning Josko Gvardiol’s first-half header. Bruno Fernandes converted a penalty in the 88th minute, and Amad Diallo sealed the victory in the 90th minute by rounding Éderson and finding the net.
Amorim described it as a “good day,” but he was later compelled to address online leaks that revealed his starting XI against City nearly 24 hours before the match. While team selections are typically announced 75 minutes before kickoff, United’s lineup for the Etihad clash was circulating on social media the evening before.

Next, the Red Devils will head to North London to face Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup quarterfinals.
