FA Community Shield is an annual curtain raiser for the new Premier League season. Although considered pre-season friendly, the game holds a huge significance with a trophy on the line and also provides a glimpse of things to come ahead of the new season.
The game traditionally is held at Wembley Stadium with the Premier League champions playing against the winners of the FA Cup. Ahead of the 2024 Community Shield match between the two Manchester clubs, let us take a look at the club with the most Community Shield wins.
5. Tottenham Hotspur – 7
Tottenham may be struggling for trophies recently but there is no denying the success they have enjoyed in English football. The Lilywhites have managed to win the Shield 7 times in their history with the first of those wins coming in the 1921 season when they beat Burnley 2-0 at the White Hart Lane.
In the 1967/68 season, Tottenham drew 3-3 with Manchester United to share the trophy, and in the 1991/92 season, they drew 0-0 against arch-rivals Arsenal to share the trophy again. The 1991/92 win was also their last Community Shield triumph. Spurs have lifted the Shield in 1921, 1951, 1961, 1962, 1967, 1981, and 1981 in their history.
4. Everton – 9
Like Tottenham, Everton also have been struggling for trophies lately. Their last major trophy came in 1995 when they lifted the FA Cup beating Manchester United in the final. However, the Toffees saw their share of success in the 1980s and the early 1990s winning the domestic league twice, the FA Cup twice, and the league cup once in the period.
Everton have also been one of the most successful teams in the Community Shield. Their first Shield triumph came in 1928, beating Blackburn Rovers 2-1 in the final. Overall the Toffees have lifted the trophy 9 times in 1928, 1932, 1963, 1970, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1995. In 1986, they shared the trophy with Liverpool as the game ended in a 1-1 draw. They last won the Shield in 1995 beating Blackburn Rovers 1-0.
3. Liverpool – 16
Liverpool are one of the most successful clubs in the English football. Domestically, Liverpool has won multiple English league titles, FA Cups, and League Cups, establishing their dominance in England. Their dominance in the domestic league between the 1970s and 1980s helped them to collect several Community Shields.
Liverpool won their first-ever Community Shield in the 1964-65 season beating Leeds United 2-0 and their last triumph came in 2022 beating Manchester City 3-1. Overall, the Reds have helped themselves to 16 Community Shield wins in 1964–65, 1973–74, 1985–86, 1988–89, 1991–92, 2000–01, 2005–06, and 2021–22.
2. Arsenal – 17
In the past decade, Arsenal made a habit of winning the FA Cup leading them to several Community Shield appearances. Gunners’ last major trophy came in 2019–20 when they lifted the FA Cup under Mikel Arteta and last season they came agonizingly close to winning the league.
Arsenal’s first Community Shield triumph came in 1930 when they beat Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 in the final and their last win came last season beating Manchester City on penalties. The Gunners have lifted the Shield 17 times in their illustrious history in 1930, 1931, 1933, 1934, 1938, 1948, 1953, 1991, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2004, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2020 and 2023.
1. Manchester United – 21
Manchester United are the most decorated club in the English football. The Red Devils have won the English top-flight league for a record 20 times, most of which came during the Sir Alex Ferguson era. The club also made a significant mark on European football winning the UEFA Champions League 3 times.
They have also won the most Community Shields for a record 21 times. Their first Shield came in 1908 beating QPR by 4-0 in the final replay and their last win came in 2016 when they beat Leicester City 2-1.
Their Shield wins came in 1908, 1911, 1952, 1956, 1957, 1965, 1967*, 1977*, 1983, 1990*, 1993, 1994, 1996, 1997, 2003, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2013, and 2016.
