Alex Morgan has firmly established herself as one of the NWSL’s all-time greats. A dynamic forward with a remarkable knack for scoring goals, Morgan has played a pivotal role in the league since its early days. She has made a significant impact on women’s football and helped to increase its global appeal.

Morgan’s career is now coming to an end and she will play the final match of her career when San Diego Wave FC faces the North Carolina Courage on Sunday, September 8 at the Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, California.

She shared the news of her retirement on social media where she also announced that she is expecting a second child. “I’m retiring,” the two-time World Cup winner announced on X. “And I have so much clarity about this decision, and I’m so happy to be able to tell you. It has been a long time coming, and this decision wasn’t easy, but at the beginning of 2024, I felt in my heart and soul that this would be the last season I would play soccer,” she added.

 

Morgan’s farewell game to make broadcast history in the U.S.

The match between the San Diego Wave and North Carolina Courage will make history as it will be the first-ever women’s sporting event in America broadcast across multiple outlets simultaneously. The game was originally scheduled to be aired on NWSL+ and Paramount+ but after the announcement of Morgan’s retirement, the game will now also be available on CBS Sports Network, Prime Video, ESPN2, and ESPN+.
“Alex Morgan has had an immeasurable impact on both the NWSL and the global soccer community – and she has inspired generations of players and fans around the world,” said NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman. “Our partners coming together to celebrate Alex is an event that speaks volumes about the power of sports and female athletes to unite fans everywhere. Alex couldn’t be more deserving of this moment.”
The game is scheduled to kick off at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.

Alex Morgan’s career stats/Honours

Alex Morgan has been one of the most integral parts of NWSL’s success since its inception in 2013. The forward has scored 60 career goals in NWSL for the San Diego Wave, Orlando Pride, and Portland Thorns. She guided the Thorns to their first-ever NWSL Championship in 2013 and also won the NWSL Golden Boot in 2022.

Morgan also played her club football in Europe with Lyon where she won a treble in 2016-17 winning the domestic league, French Cup, and the UEFA Champions League. She also had a short stint with English club Tottenham Hotspur.

Morgan has played 224 matches for her national side, scoring 123 goals and providing 123 assists. She won the FIFA World Cup twice in 2015 and 2019 and an Olympic Gold in the 2012 London Olympics.

The 35-year-old also won the CONCACAF Women’s Championship 3 times in 2014, 2018, and 2022.
