Argentina have had a perfect start to the competition and have already qualified for the quarter-finals thanks to wins against Canada and Chile.
Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez scored in their opening game against Canada to give them a 2-0 win. In La Albiceleste’s second game against Chile, Lautaro Martinez again got on the scoresheet to give them a 1-0 win late in the game.
Peru on the other hand have just one point from their opening two matches. They drew 0-0 against Chile in their opening match and lost 1-0 to Canada in their second. This has put Ricardo Gareca’s men on the brink of elimination and are in desperate need of a win to have any chance of progression.
Despite qualification already secured, Argentina would like to keep their momentum going into the knockout stages. The two sides have met 13 times previously in all competitions with Argentina winning 9 and 4 games ending in a draw. Peru are still winless against La Albiceleste. The pair last met in a FIFA World Cup qualifier match which Argentina comfortably won 2-0.

Having already qualified for the next round of the competition, Lionel Scaloni has already confirmed some big names will be rested for their clash against Peru. Lionel Messi is also likely to be rested following a tweak in his right hamstring against Chile.
“Players who have not had a chance to play in the first two games will get a chance to play because I need to see them and because they deserve it,” Scaloni said after Argentina’s recent match against Chile.
Scaloni himself will have to watch the match from the stands. He was given a one-match suspension for coming out late at halftime vs. Chile.
Peru will be without Miguel Araujo for the game against Argentina following his red card against Canada.
