Euro 2024 Preview: England Face Denmark, Slovenia Look to Keep Momentum and Spain-Italy in Heavyweight Clash

0

Euro 2024 has lived up to its expectations so far with breathtaking goals and close finishes. The action will continue on Thursday with England facing Denmark and Slovenia to take on near-neighbors Serbia in Group C. Heavyweights Spain and Italy will lock horns in a crucial Group B match. Let us take a look at today’s matches in detail.

Slovenia vs Serbia – Group C

Slovenia came from behind to earn a draw in their opening game against Denmark. A win against Serbia will put them in a very good position to qualify from the Group. Manager Matjaz Kek will likely play a team similar to the opening match that featured little experience apart from captain and goalkeeper Jan Oblak, who is playing in his first major tournament.

Serbia on the other hand put up a praise-worthy performance in their defeat against England in the opening match. Midfielder Filip Kostic will be a major doubt for this game after he suffered an injury in the left knee resulting in 31 year old having to leave the field crying.

Denmark vs England – Group C

The Three Lions got off to a winning start in their bid to win the Euro 2024 with a nervy win over Serbia. They now would look to secure their position in the next round when they take on Denmark in Frankfurt.

Denmark’s opening game was filled with emotions as Christian Eriksen scored the opening goal of their campaign, three years after suffering a cardiac arrest in the same competition. They, however, did concede an equalizer late in the game throwing away two crucial points.

The two sides famously met in Euro 2020 in the semi-final stage when England came from behind to win 2-1 and book their place in the final.

England again will back themselves to win the game but would be aware that Denmark are not the team to be taken lightly as little negligence could prove costly for Three Lions.

Spain vs Italy – Group B

In the most highly anticipated match of the tournament so far, defending champions Italy will face Spain at the Veltins-Arena. Both teams are coming on the back of wins in their opening matches with Italy beating Albania and Spain cruising past Croatia.

The two sides have met in four previous Euro tournaments with two wins a piece. Their most recent Euro meeting came in 2021 with Italy winning 4-2 on penalties to reach the final.
