EFL Cup Fourth Round Draw: Manchester City, Liverpool Face Away Tests as Arsenal Travel to Championship Side

0

The EFL Cup 3rd round concluded with Liverpool and Arsenal putting 5 past West Ham United and Bolton Wanderers respectively. Earlier, Manchester City saw off a challenge from Watford, and Tottenham came from behind to beat Coventry City 2-1. Chelsea continued their impressive start to the new season with a 5-0 triumph over Barrow.

In the 4th round, holders Liverpool will face a tricky away fixture against fellow Premier League side Brighton. Manchester United, fresh off their Europa League 1-1 draw against Twente on Wednesday, have been drawn to play Leicester City. Meanwhile, Chelsea will take on the winner of the rescheduled clash between AFC Wimbledon and Newcastle United, set to be held at St James’ Park next week. The game was postponed due to the flooding at Cherry Records Stadium.

Southampton and Brentford have been handed home fixtures against Championship sides, with Southampton set to face Sheffield Wednesday and Brentford hosting Stoke City. Arsenal will travel to Preston North End for their next challenge. Aston Villa, who beat Wycombe Wanderers in the 3rd round, will be involved in an all-Premier League clash when they face Crystal Palace at home.

In the standout matchup of Round 4, Manchester City will travel to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to face Tottenham in a mouth-watering clash. The game will be a repeat of the 2020-21 EFL Cup final when Aymeric Laporte sealed a 1-0 win for Pep Guardiola’s side at the Wembley Stadium. It was also the first game in charge for Ryan Mason in the Spurs dugout after Jose Mourinho was sacked just days before the marquee clash.

Though Manchester City will come into the game as overwhelming favorites, they will have to cope without Rodri, who is expected to miss the entire season after an injury suffered against Arsenal on Sunday. Guardiola, however, confirmed that they will use their second-string team for competition to cope with the fixture pileup.

“I would say the next round we’re going to play the players who, I announce it now, who played fewer minutes, or the second team. We are not going to waste energy for this competition, for sure,” Guardiola said in a press conference.

The fourth-round matches are scheduled to take place during the week starting October 28.
