Adrian Newey is one of the most renowned and influential figures in the world of motorsports. Celebrated for his innovative work as a race car designer and aerodynamicist, Newey has been instrumental in the success of multiple championship-winning teams. The 65-year-old has designed 14 championship-winning F1 cars throughout his career with Williams, McLaren, and most famously Red Bull where he designed 13 title-winning cars for the Milton-Keans outfit since joining in 2006.
In May 2024, Red Bull confirmed the departure of Newey from his role as chief technical officer after a breakdown with team principal Christian Horner. However, Britt agreed to stay with the defending F1 Constructors champions until early 2025 to see out his work on their first hypercar, the RB17.
Newey is now all set to join Aston Martin with the deal expected to be announced next week, ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku. According to Sky Sports, Newey will earn $26 million a year (£19.8 million) at Aston Martin, with his start date anticipated for March 2025.
Why is Adrian Newey The Right Fit for Aston Martin?
Adrian Newey’s talent for innovation and pushing the limits of aerodynamic performance is perfectly in line with Aston Martin’s goal of becoming a dominant force in F1. Alongside two-time world champion Fernando Alonso, Newey is anticipated to play a crucial role in designing Aston Martin’s 2026 car, which will debut under the new technical regulations.
Under new regulations, Alonso defined the Aston Martin project as the ‘best project’ among all given their already reduced dragforce. The budget cap may also affect some of the bigger teams like Ferrari and Red Bull which could make the British outfit among the frontrunners in the coming years.
At Aston Martin, Newey will likely work in England while signing for Mercedes or Ferrari would have forced him to move away from his home country, and with Dan Fallows (who worked with Newey at Red Bull) already in the team, the move makes sense in the broader spectrum.
Now that the deal is all but confirmed, the big question is how quickly Newey can transform Aston Martin into a world championship contender, and whether can he add to the 25 world titles he’s already secured in his illustrious career which can potentially reach 27 if Red Bull secures another double this year.
