Shubman Gill, one of India’s bright young batsmen, is receiving harsh criticism after struggling in recent matches. Former India captain and 1983 World Cup winner Kris Srikkanth has openly shared his disappointment with the selectors for continuing to support Gill despite his poor performance in the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Gill, who played his first Test for India in the 2020 Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, featured in three matches in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar series as a No. 3 batter but was able to score only 93 runs. He wasn’t the only one who struggled in Australia; even Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli scored poorly.
Speaking on his YouTube channel Srikkanth, called Gill an “overrated” player. “I have always said that Shubman Gill is an overrated cricketer but nobody took me seriously. He is a highly overrated cricketer from the current generation,” he said.
Srikkanth questioned how players are chosen and mentioned that other players, like Suryakumar Yadav, have not been given the same chances in Test cricket.
“When someone like Shubman Gill can get a long run, players like Suryakumar Yadav deserves same treatment. SKY could have been given a longer rope in red-ball cricket,” he said.
“Suryakumar failed in the only Test he played for India and the selectors decided to continue with him in only white-ball formats. It means you will have to look at other players in Test cricket. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sai Sudharsan have done well in domestic cricket and other tours. The selectors should promote these players instead of persisting with Shubman Gill,” Srikkanth added.
“Gill has managed to survive because he scores in one out of ten chances. Anyone can score runs and take wickets in India but you need to perform in SENA countries to justify your selection, and that’s where players like KL Rahul pass the test,” he concluded.
Gill missed the first match because of an injury but came back for the second and third Tests. He was dropped from the Playing XI of the fourth match. Rohit skipped the fifth and final game of the series, which gave the team a chance to bring Gill back.
