Ahead of Pakistan’s two-match Test series against South Africa later this month, the team’s red-ball head coach, Jason Gillespie, has resigned. He informed the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) of his decision on Thursday, December 12.

A Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) representative said “He has resigned,” without explaining anything. Gillespie’s departure came as no surprise after the PCB decided not to renew the contract of his assistant coach, Tim Nielsen. It is believed that Gillespie and Nielsen shared a strong working relationship.

Aaqib Javid who was recently appointed as white ball coach for Pakistan national team after Gary Kirsten’s resignation is also appointed as red ball coach for the South Africa tour. Pakistan will play two test matches starting on 26 December at SuperSport Park Cricket Stadium. Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town will host the second test of the series.

“The PCB has named Aaqib Javed as interim red-ball head coach following the resignation of red-ball head coach Jason Gillespie,” the Pakistan Board said in a statement.

However, Gillespie had a great run with the Pakistan team, he guided the team to a series victory (2-1) after losing the first test match.
