After T20I Retirement, Rohit Sharma Opens Up on IPL Future
After leading his team to World Cup trophy, Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from the T20I cricket. He announced the retirement after the presentation ceremony to media. However, he is still the Test and ODI captain of team India.
The veteran Virat Kohli and adept Ravindra Jadeja, also announced the retirement from T20 internationals after the title triumph.
About his IPL voyage, media asked the team India captain if he will continue playing in IPL.
Will Rohit Sharma Continue Playing in IPL ?
Addressing the media, the legend confirmed he will continue his game in the league,
“I had not thought of retiring from T20I at this time, but the kind of situation has come, I thought it is the perfect situation for me to say goodbye to T20I and yes, I will 100% play IPL.”
In the Indian Premier League, Rohit Sharma has proved himself to be the joint most successful captain. He has won six titles – one with Deccan Chargers and five as captain of Mumbai Indians (MI). It was Rohit Sharma’s first season as captain with Mumbai Indians, which won them their maiden title in 2013.
MI’s top scorer, Rohit Sharma was also the Player of the Final as Mumbai beat Chennai Super Kings to win their second IPL title in 2015. Under his leadership, Mumbai Indians have won the IPL in 2017, 2019 and 2020.
In shocking turn of events, franchise made a bold move of replacing Rohit Sharma from his captaincy position. In 2024, though facing backlash from MI fans, captaincy was handed over to Hardik Pandya. Rohit played under Hardik’s leadership in IPL 2024 while Hardik tasted championship victory under Rohit’s leadership in T20 World Cup 2024.
With Hardik Pandya, Mumbai Indians finished at the last spot in IPL 2024. The next season of IPL expects some changes because of the power shift between Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya. Rohit Sharma other than being successful captain also distinguishes himself for being the only Indian cricketer having played all seasons of T20 World Cup. He started his journey with T20 World Cup trophy in 2007 and retired in 2024 edition on a same note, lifting the trophy.
