“Leave that Alone,” Fever Coach Tells Caitlin Clark to “Just Play Our Game” Amid On Court Behavior Issues
Caitlin Clark made her WNBA debut against Connecticut Suns on May 14 losing 92-71. She scored 20 points on her debut. After a quiet second game, she again rose to the occasion in her third game scoring 22 points against New York Liberty and another 21 against Seattle Storm.
Known for her aggressive style and super physical approach, Clark was again the center of headlines in Fever’s recent game against Los Angels Sparks. The 22-year-old scored a career high 30 points in the game which they eventually lost 88-82. This defeat is their seventh in eight games placing them one place from bottom in the Eastern conference table.
During their loss to Sparks, Clark’s disciplinary issues were again in question when she expressed her frustration in the fourth quarter of the game raising her arms in disbelief when she was called up for going over an opposing screen. However, this didn’t sit well with her coach, Christie Sides.
“We’re spending too much time talking to the officials“, Fever coach, said after the game “We’ve got to leave that alone. We’ve got to just play our game and let them do their job, and not put it in their hands to make decisions… that ultimately hurts… we shouldn’t get technicals… let me go after the officials.“
In their game against Seattle Storm yesterday Clark again shone scoring 20 points and assisting 9. The game, however, ended in 88-103 defeat.
Caitlin Clark’s on-court behavior has come under scanner before
Caitlin Clark is one of the rising stars in women’s basketball. In the college basketball she has racked up 3,951 points in four seasons. However, all has not gone smoothly for the 22-year-old as she has received her share of criticism for her behavior.
During 2024 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament, Clark was continuously complaining the referee about the officiating. The complaining reached a point when her dad, who was watching from the stands, had to intervene by yelling at her.
During an interview with ESPN, Clark recalled that she was once kicked out of the gym for being overcompetitive and getting in peoples’ faces unnecessarily. “All I wanted to do was win,” Clark told ESPN.
In another incident she mocked her opponents Louisville by doing John Cena “You cant see me” gesture after scoring a three pointer.
