Wimbledon Day 3 Recap: Naomi Osaka Stunned, Sinner Scrapes Through, Alcaraz, Gauff Advance
Day 3 of the 2024 Wimbledon saw some of the big names like Coco Gauff, Jannik Sinner, and Carlos Alcaraz cruise to the next round while four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka was stunned by
Emma Navarro.
World No.1 Jannick Sinner beat his fellow countryman Matteo Berrettini 7-6(3), 7-6(4), 2-6, 7-6(4) to reach the third round. After a grueling battle that lasted three hours and 45 minutes, Sinner emerged victorious mainly due to the backhand errors from Berrettini at key times.
This win meant that Sinner extended his record against fellow Italians to 14-0.
2024 French Open winner Carlos Alcaraz defeated Aleksandar Vukic of Australia in straight sets 7-6(5), 6-2, 6-2.
5th seed Daniil Medvedev needed four sets to beat Alexandre Muller 6-7(3), 7-6(4), 6-4, 7-5 and Fabio Fognini defeated 8th seed Casper Ruud by 6-4, 7-5, 6-7(1), 6-3.
In the match of the day Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada defeated Thanasi Kokkinakis of Australia in a 5-set thriller 6-4, 7-5, 6-7, 4-6, 4-6, 4-6.
Emma Navarro of the USA defeated Naomi Osaka 6-4, 6-1. Osaka has witnessed a disastrous 2024 so far. The Japanese was eliminated in the first round of the Australian Open this year. In the French Open, she lost to eventual champion Iga Świątek in the second round and now fell again at the second hurdle against Navarro.
The four-time Grand Slam champion quickly turned her attention towards the upcoming Paris Olympics. “Since I’m out so early, I really want to take the time and train for the Olympics because I do want to do well,” she said.
In the other matches, Coco Gauff beat the Romanian qualifier Anca Todoni 6-2, 6-1. Home favorite Emma Raducanu saw off Emma Raducanu in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 and French Open finalist Jasmine Paolini beat Greet Minnen 7-6(5), 6-2.
