The US Open is one of the most prestigious tournaments in tennis that has captivated fans for generations. Flushing Meadows has seen some of the best female tennis players from all around the globe grace the hard court with their presence and cement their legacies in the tennis history books.
Being the last Grand Slam of the tennis calendar, the competition tests the endurance and mental toughness of the players resulting in some of the most thrilling matches in tennis history further adding to its global popularity.

5. Billie Jean King – 3 titles
Billie Jean King is one of the most renowned tennis players in the world. She was one of the most dominant women’s players in the 1960s and 1970s and won an astonishing 39 Grand Slams including 12 in singles, 16 in women’s doubles, and 11 in mixed doubles in her career. Out of her 12 Singles titles, she won 3 of those in the US Open since the open era began in 1968.
King also devoted her career to fighting for equal pay for female tennis players. She was an integral part of the formation of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) becoming a social icon for women’s athletes in any sport. Despite the success she enjoyed in the Grand Slams, the highlight of her career came when she famously defeated Bobby Riggs in the “Battle of the Sexes” match in 1973.
4. Martina Navratilova – 4 titles
Martina Navratilova was the most dominant force in women’s tennis in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Known for her athleticism, Navratilova was full of competitive spirit, and her rivalry with Chris Evert is regarded as one of the best to date. She won an incredible 59 Grand Slam titles, including 18 in singles, 31 in doubles, and 10 in mixed doubles in her career, cementing her name as one of tennis’ all-time greats.
Navratilova won 4 US Open titles in her career. It took her 11 attempts to win her maiden US Open title doing so in 1983. She then went on to win three more in 1984, 1986, and 1987. Her resilience and persistence made her one of the most loved tennis players of her generation.
3. Steffi Graf – 5 titles
Steffi Graf’s tennis journey has been nothing short of extraordinary. Hailing from West Germany, Graf’s innovative style of play and incredible forehand play made her one of the most successful tennis players in history. In her career, she accumulated 22 Grand Slam singles titles, 5 of which came in the US Open Singles in 1988 1989, 1993, 1995, and 1996.
Graf was the first player in history to win the “Golden Grand Slam” after winning all four Grand Slams and an Olympic Gold Medal in 1988. She also has the longest reign in the world no 1 ranking in Men’s or Women’s divisions for 377 consecutive weeks.
2. Chris Evert – 6 titles
Born in Florida, USA, Chris Evert was known as America’s tennis sweetheart. Her elegance, humility, and ability to remain calm under pressure made her one of the most influential athletes of her generation. Evert won 18 Grand Slams in her career including 6 US Opens in 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1980, and 1982.
Evert became the first player, male or female, to reach 1,000 singles match wins and was also ranked either No. 1 or No. 2 in the world from 1975 to 1986. Evert was named the Associated Press Female Athlete of the Year four times in her career.

Serena Williams is one of the most celebrated athletes in the world. Hailing from Michigan, United States, Williams quickly rose to fame thanks to her unparalleled athleticism and competitive drive. She won a record 23 Grand Slam titles including 6 US Open wins and was the second player in tennis history to win a “Golden Grand Slam”, winning all four Grand Slams and an Olympic Gold at the London Olympics.
Williams holds a record of winning 6 Grand Slam singles titles without dropping a set and her 367 career wins is a women’s record, only six behind men’s record of 373 set by Roger Federer.
