Day 3 of the 2024 French open saw some of the big names like Novak Djokovic, Casper Ruud and Aryna Sabalenka all cruise into the second round as rain continued to pour down at Rolland-Garros.
World no. 1 Djokovic got off to a fairly easy start beating Pierre-Hugues Herbert in straight sets 6-4, 7-6, 6-4. Seventh seed Casper Ruud made light work of British Felipe Meligeni Alves winning 6-3, 6-4, 6-3. Taylor Fritz overcame Federico Coria 2-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-1 and Danish 13th seed Holger Rune saw off British Briton Daniel Evans 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. In an all Spanish clash, Jaume Munar beat Roberto Bautista Agut 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.
In the Women’s matches, two time Australian open champion Aryna Sabalenka defeated Erika Andreeva 6-1, 6-2 to reach second round. 14th seed Maddison Keys beat Renata Zarazua 6-3, 6-2 to advance. Victoria Azarenka, also the two time Australian open winner, breezed past Argentina’s Nadia Podoroska 6-1, 6-0. Three time grand slam winner Angelique Kerber was knocked out in the first round by Dutch Arantxa Rus 6-4, 6-3. Elena Rybakina of Kazakistan defeated Belgian Greet Minnen 6-2, 6-3.
Day 4 Preview:
Day 4 of 2024 French open will see the commencement of second round matches. In the men’s division
Court Suzanne-Lenglen will host Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Daniel Altmaier with many banking on Tsitsipas to go all the way this year. Andrey Rublev vs Pedro Martinez is also set to take place at the same venue. Philippe-Chatrier arena will host a mouth watering encounter between Jannik Sinner and Richard Gasquet.
After defeating Andy Murray in the first round, Pavel Kotov is the latest assignment for Stanislas Wawrinka and Carlos Alcaraz faces Dutch Jesper de Jong in his second round clash.
In arguably the biggest match of the day, the current world no. 1 Iga Swiatek will clash with the former world no 1 Naomi Osaka in Court Philippe-Chatrier Centre. Caroline Garcia and Sofia Kenin will also face off in Philippe-Chatrier. 20-year-old Coco Gauff will collide with Tamara Zidansek.
