Rain affected Day 2 of the 2024 French Open was filled with excitements and some shock exits with fourteen time champion Rafael Nadal knocked out in the very first round.
In his potentially last appearance at the Roland Garros, Rafael Nadal was beaten in the first round by Alexandar Zverev in straight sets by 6-3, 7-6, 6-3. This defeat is Rafa’s fourth loss in 116 matches at the French open since 2005. “If it’s the last time, I’ve enjoyed it,” emotional Nadal said after the match.
In the other matches of the day, Jannik Sinner overcame American Christopher Eubanks by 6-3, 6-3, 6-4. Ninth seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas beat Hungarian Marton Fucsovics 7-6, 6-4, 6-1 and the French entertainer Gael Monfils defeated Brazilian Lorenzo Musetti in four sets 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Daniil Medvedev saw off a scare from Dominik Koepfer defeating the German 6-3 6-4 5-7 6-3 to advance to the second round.
In the women’s matches, the world no 1 Iga Swiatek overcame Leolia Jeanjean in the first round. Reigning Wimbledon championship Marketa Vondrousova defeated Rebeka Masarova 6-1, 6-3. US open champion Coco Gauff beat Julia Avdeeva in striaght sets by 6-1, 6-1 and sixth seeded Maria Sakkari was upsetted by Varvara Gracheva 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Day 3 Preview:
Day 3 of this year’s French Open will see World no 1 Novak Djokovic start his campaign against Pierre-Hugues Herbert. Dan Evans and Holger Rune will face off in the night session at Court Suzanne Lenglen. Taylor Fritz will play Federico Coria in their round 1 encounter. Seventh seeded Caspar will face Felipe Alves of Brazil.
In the Women’s division, Katie Boulter of Britain will face Paula Badosa in a tough match. Aryna Sabalenka will play against Erika Andreeva and Elena Rybakina will meet Greet Minnen of Belgium. American fourteenth seed Maddison Keys will face Renata Zarazúa of Mexico.
