The first round of the 2024 French Open began on 26 May with a big name knocked out on the very first day of the tournament. The first round matches are spread across three days with 40 matches scheduled on Day 1.
The biggest match of Day 1 was scheduled in the night session at Court Philippe-Chatrier were Andy Murray faced Stan Wawrinka. Murray, who is likely going to retire this summer, was beaten in straight sets 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 by the 2015 French open winner. After Sunday’s win Wawrinka was quick to praise Murray praising his never say die attitude. “Super young, he was an amazing fighter. He always found solutions. He’s one of the hardest workers on tour” said the Swiss maestro.
In the other big results of Day 1 Carlos Alcaraz easily overcame JJ Wolf 6-1, 6-2, 6-1 on Court Philippe Chatrie and Grigor Dimitrov breezing past Aleksandar Kovacevic by 6-4, 6-3, 6-4. Home hero Richard Gasquet defeated Croatia’s Borna Coric 7-6, 7-6, 6-4. Sixth seed Andrey Rublev beat Taro Daniel in tough encounter by 6-2, 6-7, 6-3, 7-5.
In the Women’s matches, 2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin came from a set down to beat Laura Siegemund 4-6 6-2 6-2. Naomi Osaka also took the same route to defeat Lucia Bronzetti 6-1, 4-6, 7-5, ensuring her first win at the event since 2021. Carolina Garcia and Eva Lys also put on a show with the local hero Carolina emerging victorious 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.
Day 2 Preview:
Day 2 of the 2024 French open will see Rafael Nadal lock horns world no 4 Alexander Zverev at Court Philippe-Chatrier. The 14 time French open winner will have his hands full against Zverev as looks to add to his already illustrious career.
Polish star Iga Świątek will face local hero Leolia Jeanjean. 5th seeded Daniil Medvedev will play Dominik Koepfer. Jannik Sinner, who was a doubt for this tournament due to his injury in Madrid last month faces Christopher Eubanks in the first match at Court Suzanne-Lenglen.
