iThe war between Iran and Israel has seen action from American military contributing to the loss lives in the Middle East. As such, Iran’s participation in the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 in the US is under a doubt.
The Iran football team is placed in Group G alongside New Zealand, Belgium and Egypt, with all of their matches scheduled in the US. Earlier, when the war was underway, Iran’s sports minister Ahmad Donyamali said that it is unlikely that the team will participate in the World Cup due to security reasons.
Things then got ugly with US President Donald Trump saying that while the Iranian team is welcome to play in the country, it might not appropriate for their life and safety. However, he later de-escalated saying any threat to Iranian players won’t come from United States.
Iran wants venue switch for their matches in FIFA World Cup 2026
Last month, the Iranian Football Federation has said they were in discussions with FIFA to switch their venue. In response, FIFA’s president Gianni Infantino said tha the country will play their matches in the US as scheduled, but it is not as straightforward, Iran still wants to move their matches out of US.
Will the current ceasefire pave way for Iran to play in the FIFA World Cup 2026?
A couple of days ago, a two-week ceasefire was agreed in the ongoing hostilities. This pause in the war could allow for back channel talks and a possibility that this time period of peace could last.
If that turns out to be the case, it is possible that we will see some positive progress regarding Iran’s participation in the FIFA World Cup 2026. Still, Iran remain adamant that they will only play in the tournament if their matches are held outside US, with the World Cup co-hosted by Mexico and Canada.
Iran’s push to play their matches in either Mexico or Canada also has some support. New Zealand footballers are willing to accommodate the change, with their footballers adamant that Iran has earned the right to play in the World Cup.
“They deserve to be there as qualifiers. If we’ve got to play them in Mexico or Canada, then yeah, we play them there. It’s not really a big deal for me,” midfielder Ryan Thomas told Reuters news agency.
