Which Foreign Managers Can Replace Gareth Southgate?
After the Euro 2024 final defeat against Spain, England’s manager Gareth Southgate stepped down from his position as manager of England. Southgate did a respectable job with the Three Lions leading them to two consecutive Euro finals.
Now with England’s managerial position vacant, let us take a look at five foreign managers who can replace Gareth Southgate.
1. Pep Guardiola
Pep Guardiola is regarded as one of the best managers in football. He has won almost everything at the club level with FC Barcelona, FC Bayern Munich, and his current club Manchester City. There have been rumors from the past that Guardiola would take up an international job if the opportunity presents itself.

Now that the England job is vacant, there is a possibility that the Spaniard would be the next England manager. However, knowing that Guardiola is under contract with the English champions until 2026, the FA may well wait for Guardiola and make an interim appointment for the time being.
2. Mauricio Pochettino
Mauricio Pochettino made a name for himself in English football thanks to his brilliant work at Tottenham Hotspur FC whom he led to a UEFA Champions League final. He then had below-bar stints with PSG and Chelsea and is currently without a club. He was the leading candidate to replace Eric Ten Hag at Manchester United but the Red Devils opted to stay with Ten Hag.
Pochettino is reportedly in the hunt for a job and could well be provided with the England role. The Argentine has expressed his desire to manage in England recently and knowing his expertise in English football, he may well be granted his wish after Southgate’s departure.
3. Jurgen Klopp
Jurgen Klopp is without a club currently following his departure from Liverpool. He bought back the old glory days of the Reds, winning them the UEFA Champions League in 2018-19 and the Premier League in 2019-20. Now he is rumored to be linked with the England National job.

Klopp has also been linked with Germany and a vacant United States job but his reputation and experience in English football makes him one of the frontrunners for the England role.
4. Thomas Tuchel
Thomas Tuchel is another world-class manager who is without a job for next season. Tuchel led underdogs Chelsea to a Champions League win in 2021. He had a somewhat disappointing season with Bayern recently and decided to part ways with the German giants. According to various reports, Tuchel ‘is open’ to replace Southgate as England’s new manager if presented with the opportunity.
BBC Sport football news reporter Nizaar Kinsella says: “Sources close to Tuchel have told me that he remains interested in the role.” Now it remains to be seen whether FA does end up contacting Tuchel for the role given the position of other candidates.
5. Jose Mourinho
Jose Mourinho is another household name linked with the England National role. Mourinho is no stranger to English football having been at the helm of Manchester United, Chelsea, and Tottenham Hotspur. The Portuguese has yet to manage a national team in his career and may well be presented with an opportunity following Southgate’s departure.

That being said, the move does look a little unlikely as the two-time UEFA Champions League winner recently signed a deal with Turkish club Fernabache.
