England manager Gareth Southgate stepped down from his position after losing to Spain in the final of Euro 2024. According to reports, The Three Lions were set to offer Southgate a new contract but the 53-year-old has opted to look for a new challenge in his career.
Let us take a look at five names that can potentially replace Gareth Southgate as the new manager.
1. Lee Carsley
Lee Carsley is the favorite to replace Gareth Southgate in the eyes of many. Carsley is the current manager of England’s Under 21 side and led them to victory in last year’s U21 Euros. He recently turned down the opportunity to become the manager of the Republic of Ireland.
But with England’s managerial position now vacant, he is tipped to follow Southgate’s path of becoming the manager of England after managing their Under 21 team.
2. Eddie Howe
Eddie Howe has done wonders for Newcastle United ever since joining from AFC Bournemouth in 2021. In his second season in charge of the Magpies, he led them to a fourth-place finish resulting in Newcastle United qualifying for the UEFA Champions League for the first time in 20 years.
Howe recently signed a ‘long term’ contract with Newcastle but with the England job on offer, it remains to be seen whether he decides to leave Newcastle and replace Southgate as the new head coach of England.
3. Graham Potter
Graham Potter is currently without a club following his departure from the Chelsea Football Club in early 2023. He is widely known for his impressive work at Brighton and Hove Albion. Potter led the Potters to their highest league finish of 9th in the 2021-22 season.
Potter has reportedly turned down a number of job offers since his Chelsea sacking and the England offer may be too good to be rejected for the 49-year-old.
4. Frank Lampard
It would be safe to say that Frank Lampard has not had the best of starts to his managerial career. He started his career at Derby County and led them to the Championship playoff final in 2018-19. He then had disappointing stints with Chelsea and Everton, getting sacked at both clubs prematurely.
The Chelsea legend is now linked to the England National job after Southgate’s departure. While Lampard may not be the most popular name in the managerial market, he definitely is a worthy candidate for the role given his experience at the highest level.
However, he will be seen as a left-field choice given his record in English football as a manager.
5. Steven Gerrard
Steven Gerrard is viewed as one of the brightest coaches in Britain. In 2020-21, he guided Rangers to an unbeaten league title win, doing a double over rivals Celtic in the process. After a below-par stint at Aston Villa, Gerrard made a switch to Al-Ettifaq of the Saudi Pro League.
Gerrard has gained a lot of admirers in his short managerial career thanks to his aggressive style of play. The Liverpool legend was linked to The Young Lions’ managerial job recently but now with the senior role up for grabs, he would be considered to replace Gareth Southgate. His time at Aston Villa may prove to be a thorn in the flesh and will largely be considered as an outside contender for the role.
