English football faced a moment of concern as West Ham United announced on social media that forward Michail Antonio has been involved in a car accident. The Premier League club extended their thoughts and prayers to the Jamaican international’s family and friends, assuring fans that updates on his condition will be shared in due course.

The announcement initially sent waves of concern through the football world, as fans and fellow players rallied to offer their heartfelt support.

“West Ham United can confirm that forward Michail Antonio has been involved in a traffic accident today. The thoughts and prayers of everyone at the Club are with Michail, his family, and friends at this time. The Club will issue an update in due course,” stated West Ham United on their social media handles.

However, the Hammers have now released a statement confirming that the Jamaican is in a stable condition. “West Ham United can confirm that Michail Antonio is in stable condition following a road traffic accident this afternoon in the Essex area,” the club said. “Michail is conscious and communicating and is currently under close supervision at a central London hospital.”

West Ham urged fans to respect Antonio’s privacy during this ‘difficult time,’ stating, ‘The club will provide no further comment this evening but will share updates in due course.’

The Essex County Fire and Rescue Service reported responding to an incident in Epping on Saturday afternoon, where they rescued a man trapped inside his vehicle. Essex Police confirmed they are investigating a severe collision involving a Ferrari and have appealed for witnesses or dashcam footage to assist with their inquiries.

Clubs across the league have shown solidarity with Antonio and West Ham. Nottingham Forest, Antonio’s former team, shared that ‘everyone’s thoughts’ are with him, while Fulham extended ‘best wishes,’ and Bournemouth added, ‘sending our love to Michail’ under West Ham’s statement.

The 34-year-old London-born footballer, a pivotal figure for West Ham, has represented Jamaica’s national team over 20 times, scoring five goals. With 68 Premier League goals, Antonio stands as the club’s all-time top scorer in the competition, surpassing the legendary Paolo Di Canio’s 47.

West Ham are scheduled to face Wolves on Monday in a crucial Premier League match, but Antonio’s health rightly remains the primary concern over his availability for the fixture.
