Manchester United Reportedly Lose Key Backroom Member Weeks After coach Ruben Amorim’s Arrival

In a significant development, Manchester United has lost a significant backroom member after just a few weeks of Ruben Amorim’s arrival at Old Trafford. The news comes a day after Manchester United suffered a 2-3 loss against Nottingham Forest, highlighting the task in hand for the Portuguese manager.

Dan Ashworth has stepped down as Manchester United’s sporting director just five months after assuming the role, according to multiple reports from the UK. Previously the sporting director at Newcastle United, Ashworth played a pivotal role in the Magpies’ resurgence, culminating in their return to the Champions League after a two-decade absence last season. Following a period of gardening leave, Ashworth joined United as part of a strategic overhaul spearheaded by new co-owner Jim Ratcliffe, who assumed control earlier in 2024.

According to reports from The Athletic, Ashworth mutually agreed to part ways with Manchester United following discussions with newly appointed Chief Executive Omar Berrada. This departure signifies another significant shift in the club’s structure this season, coming shortly after the dismissal of former manager Erik ten Hag in October and the subsequent appointment of Ruben Amorim as head coach.

“Dan Ashworth will be leaving his role as Sporting Director of Manchester United by mutual agreement. We would like to thank Dan for his work and support during a transitional period for the club and wish him well for the future.” the club statement read.

As sporting director, Ashworth oversaw football performance, recruitment, and operations, playing a key role in efforts to revamp the club’s strategy during his brief tenure. He played a pivotal role in United’s significant summer transfer activity, overseeing the arrivals of Leny Yoro, Manuel Ugarte, Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui, and Joshua Zirkzee.

With more than two decades of off-field expertise, Ashworth began his journey as the technical and sporting director at West Bromwich Albion in 2007. While at the FA, Ashworth was widely recognized for his instrumental role in England’s World Cup triumphs at the U-17 and U-20 levels in 2017. He later held key roles as sporting director at Brighton & Hove Albion and Newcastle United before his move to Manchester United.

Several anonymous sources suggest that Manchester United initiated the decision to part ways with Ashworth, although the club maintains that the termination of his contract was mutually agreed upon.
