Manchester City Win At Last, Liverpool Score 5 and Manchester United’s Misery Continues: Premier League Recap
The Premier League delivered another thrilling weekend as Manchester City returned to winning ways with a comfortable win over Leicester City, Liverpool scored five in a dominant display, and Manchester United’s struggles continued as Newcastle United downed them at Old Trafford.
Man City back to winning ways
Manchester City eased the pressure on Pep Guardiola with a 2-0 win over Leicester on Sunday, marking only their second victory in 14 matches during a challenging period for the reigning English champions. Goals from Savinho and Erling Haaland on either side of halftime ended an eight-game winless streak away from home.
However, the display fell short of the high standards City have established during their run of four consecutive Premier League titles. The win moves City up to sixth in the table, though they remain 14 points adrift of leaders Liverpool, who still have a game in hand.
Liverpool hit 5 past West Ham
Mohamed Salah shone once again, netting his 20th goal of the season as Liverpool thrashed West Ham 5-0 to extend their Premier League lead to eight points, with a game in hand over their closest rivals. Arne Slot’s men secured victory by halftime, with Luis Díaz opening the scoring via a deflected effort before Salah showcased his brilliance, setting up Cody Gakpo with a clever assist and then scoring his milestone goal just before the interval.
Salah’s only regret was missing out on a hat-trick after spurning several second-half chances, but his exceptional form was evident as he dribbled from his own half to set up Diogo Jota for Liverpool’s fifth. Earlier, Trent Alexander-Arnold’s long-range effort deflected off Max Kilman to find the net on a night where almost everything clicked for Liverpool.
Newcastle United stun Man United
Alexander Isak found the net for a sixth consecutive Premier League game as Newcastle secured a 2-0 victory at Old Trafford on Monday, handing Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United their worst home form in the top flight since the 1970s. Isak compounded the home fans’ misery early, netting his eighth goal in six matches with a header after just four minutes. The Swedish striker gave Newcastle the lead before Joelinton made it 2-0 15 minutes later, outjumping Lisandro Martinez to score another header.
Isak saw a second goal ruled out after half an hour, and moments later, Sandro Tonali struck the woodwork as Newcastle came close to completely overwhelming their opponents. Newcastle’s dominant performance marked the first time since February 1979 that United have suffered three consecutive home league defeats and the first instance since 1962 of five league losses in a single calendar month.
Tottenham held by Wolves; Nottingham Forest rise to 2nd
Jorgen Strand Larsen’s late equalizer piled more pressure on Ange Postecoglou as Tottenham were held to a 2-2 draw by Wolves on Sunday. The visitors struck first when Hwang Hee-chan scored in the seventh minute, but Rodrigo Bentancur quickly responded with a header from Pedro Porro’s corner just five minutes later.
Tottenham had a chance to take control before halftime, but Son Heung-min’s 43rd-minute penalty was saved by Jose Sa. Brennan Johnson, who earned the penalty after being fouled by Andre, eventually gave Spurs the lead with a close-range finish following a link-up with Dejan Kulusevski in the chaotic closing moments of the first half. Despite Tottenham’s opportunities, including a costly late miss by Kulusevski that Santiago Bueno cleared off the line, Larsen capitalized on Rayan Ait-Nouri’s pass to fire past Fraser Forster in the 87th minute and secure a dramatic draw for Wolves.
Nottingham Forest climbed to second in the Premier League table after a 2-0 victory over Everton, whose struggles in attack persist. Nuno Espírito Santo’s team delivered another resilient away performance, overcoming the late loss of key center-back Murillo to injury during the warm-up. For Everton, the defeat highlighted ongoing issues in front of goal, with Sean Dyche’s side failing to score in seven of their last nine matches. While it marked only their third home league loss this season, their fading form at Goodison Park leaves them precariously close to the relegation zone.
Ipswich earn historic win over Chelsea; Fulham and Bournemouth play entertaining draw
Liam Delap and Omari Hutchinson found the net either side of halftime as Ipswich Town ended a 23-year wait for a Premier League win at Portman Road, securing a 2-0 victory over Chelsea on Monday. For Chelsea, the defeat marked their third in four matches, leaving them with just one point from their last three games and dropping to fourth, 10 points adrift of leaders Liverpool, who have played one game fewer.
Dango Ouattara salvaged a point for AFC Bournemouth in a thrilling 2-2 draw with fellow European contenders Fulham on Sunday. After Evanilson equalized Raul Jimenez’s first-half header, Fulham looked set for victory when Harry Wilson put them back in front with 18 minutes remaining. However, a late twist saw Ouattara chip Bernd Leno with finesse to secure a point for Bournemouth.
Crystal Palace beat Southampton; Brighton hold Aston Villa
Crystal Palace narrowly defeated bottom-placed Southampton 2-1 at Selhurst Park on Sunday, securing their second home win of the Premier League season through goals from Eberechi Eze and Trevor Chalobah. The win pushed Palace up to 15th in the table, six points above the relegation zone, while Southampton, still winless under new manager Ivan Juric, remain on track for the lowest points total in Premier League history.
Unai Emery was left frustrated as his Aston Villa side were held to a 2-2 draw by Brighton, failing to cap off an impressive year with a win. Goals from Ollie Watkins and Morgan Rogers seemed to have completed a comeback after Simon Adingra’s opener for Brighton. However, Tariq Lamptey’s strike 10 minutes from time earned the Seagulls a point, leaving Villa in ninth place, two points ahead of their opponents.
