How Chelsea’s Cole Palmer Made Premier History

0

Since his move to Chelsea in the summer of 2023, Cole Palmer has quickly established himself as a pivotal player. Leaving Manchester City in pursuit of more consistent first-team opportunities, Palmer has rapidly become integral to Chelsea’s lineup, consistently showcasing his playmaking abilities and goal-scoring prowess.

The 22-year-old has now written his name in Premier League history books as he becomes the first player to net four goals in the first half of a Premier League match during Chelsea’s remarkable 4-2 victory over Brighton on Saturday. Palmer found the back of the net in the 21st, 28th, 31st, and 41st minutes of Saturday’s match which included a penalty and a free kick goal.

With just 19 minutes and 57 seconds between Palmer’s first and fourth goals, only Jermain Defoe (for Tottenham vs. Wigan in November 2009) has managed to score four Premier League goals in a shorter span, doing so in 17 minutes and 56 seconds.

“I should have had five or six [goals],” Palmer told the BBC. “When I missed the first chance I was upset but with the way they played and their high line I felt we’d get more chances.”

“The manager set up a good game plan, we knew how to attack them with first-time passes in behind. Three points is what we needed and that is what we got,” he added.

This is not the first time Palmer has found the back of the net four times in a PL match. He had previously netted four goals in a single game during last season’s 6-0 triumph over Everton in April. He also became the fourth player, joining Didier Drogba, Frank Lampard, and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, to record three Premier League hat tricks for Chelsea.

Which players have scored 4 goals in a PL match?

While only five players (Andy Cole, Jermain Defoe, Alan Shearer, Dimitar Berbatov, and Sergio Agüero) have managed to score five goals in a single Premier League match, 30 players have achieved the feat of netting four goals in a game. Among them, Palmer and notable names such as Sergio Aguero, Yakubu, Frank Lampard, Michael Owen, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and Robbie Fowler have each accomplished it twice.

Aguero is the only player to score four or more goals in a Premier League match on three separate occasions. His four-goal displays came against Tottenham in 2015 and Leicester in 2016 and scored 5 against Newcastle United in 2015-16.
