Cristiano Ronaldo scored a brace on the final day of the Saudi Pro League season to etch his name in the history books. The 39-year old became the highest scorer in the league in a single campaign with two goals against Al Ittihad.
With this Ronaldo took his tally to 35 goals for the season. He passed Abderrazak Hamdallah’s tally of 34 set in 2019.
Following the record-breaking night, he took to social media to express his feelings in a statement posted on ‘X’. “I don’t follow the records, the records follow me,” read the post by the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.
Al-Nassr finished the season in second place behind rivals Al-Hilal who had an exemplary season not having lost a single game through the 34-game season.
It ended an action-packed season for Ronaldo, who scored four hat tricks and collected one red card. He was also suspended for an obscene gesture in February at Al Shabab fans who had been chanting the name of Lionel Messi, Ronaldo’s longstanding soccer rival.
Despite the individual accolades for Ronaldo this campaign, it was a disappointing one for a talented side that boasted other global stars such as Sadio Mane and Brozovic. Al Nassr finished a distant second behind Al Hilal in the league table and failed to win a trophy in the Saudi Cup or Asian Champions League.
