Manchester United’s captain Bruno Fernandes shared that he offered an apology to Erik Ten Hag after the manager’s departure following a 2-1 league defeat to West Ham.

United later drew 1-1 with Chelsea at Old Trafford, with Fernandes breaking his scoring drought by netting a penalty to give United a brief lead. However, Moises Caicedo’s late volley leveled the match for Chelsea. United squandered several opportunities to reclaim the lead, leaving them with their poorest Premier League start in almost 40 years.

With two more games remaining under his guidance before Rúben Amorim officially steps in on Nov. 11, Van Nistelrooy acknowledged it’s been a “challenging” week for the club. He noted that the players have had to “reflect on themselves” following their disappointing start to the season.

In the post-match interview with Sky Sports, the Portuguese midfielder revealed that he apologized to the former manager Ten Hag. “It is not good for anyone at the club when the manager goes. You have to take some of the blame on yourself because it is the team that is not doing so well and it is easier to get rid of a manager than 15 players.” Fernandes said.

“I spoke to the manager and apologized. We are not scoring goals and I feel responsible. I normally score a lot of goals but I always give 100% and he is aware of that.” he added.

It was the Dutchman who gave Fernandes the captain’s armband and made him one of the ever-presents in the team. Despite Manchester United’s struggles under Ten Hag, Fernandes expressed gratitude toward his former manager, acknowledging the players’ responsibility for the disappointing start to the season.
Following Ten Hag’s exit, Ruud van Nistelrooy stepped in as interim manager, but the United board acted swiftly, naming Ruben Amorim as Ten Hag’s successor. The Portuguese manager will transition from Sporting CP during the upcoming international break, taking on the challenging task of lifting United from their current 13th position in the Premier League. Fernandez feels optimistic about his countryman’s arrival and praised his impact on his former side Sporting Lisbon.
“Ruben Amorim brought excitement back to the club. It was a little bit split when he came but he transformed everything and brought everyone together,” Fernandes said.
Amorim’s first assignment as Man Utd boss will be an away trip to Ipswich Town in the league before a European tie against FK Bodø/Glimt at home.
