Barcelona Reportedly Find a Way to Extend Dani Olmo’s Stay at the Club

Barcelona are reportedly close to finalizing a €120m deal that would theoretically enable them to register Dani Olmo for the rest of the season.

Olmo, who returned to his boyhood club this summer in a €55m (£45.6m) transfer 11 years after departing the academy to pursue first-team opportunities, has become part of a squad navigating the club’s financial struggles. Barcelona’s ongoing battle with La Liga’s stringent economic rules has compounded their challenges in recent years.

Hansi Flick could only include his new attacking midfielder from the third week of the season after Barcelona utilized 80% of Andreas Christensen’s wages, made available due to the Dane’s injury, to fit Dani Olmo within their salary cap.

According to Sport, Barcelona are set to escalate the issue to a Court of First Instance, planning to file a fresh lawsuit against La Liga on Monday, December 30, in an effort to overturn the decision. Meanwhile, with time running short, the club has opted to implement a financial contingency plan to ensure both Dani Olmo and Pau Victor remain eligible to play.

The plan involves the sale of VIP boxes at Spotify Camp Nou, an initiative that has been in the works for some time. Initially aiming to generate €200 million, Barcelona has finalized a €120 million agreement with a Qatari company, granting them exclusive marketing rights for the premium seating over the next 20 years.

This temporary measure was set to expire on December 31. Barcelona urgently petitioned the city’s commercial court for an extension to buy more time to secure the necessary funds, but their appeal was denied on Friday. With several Premier League clubs eyeing Olmo, who would become a free agent in January if no deal was finalized before the end of 2024, Barcelona now appears to have secured a last-minute solution.

The anticipated nine-figure windfall is expected to not only secure Dani Olmo’s eligibility to play for Barcelona in 2025 but also provide the club with increased flexibility in upcoming transfer windows. If confirmed, the deal would enable the Catalan giants to reach the coveted “1:1” financial threshold, allowing them to spend one euro for every euro earned.

Olmo, meanwhile, has shown no signs of concern and was the first player on the field during Barcelona’s public training session on December 29.
