As Roma Announce De Rossi Replacement Within Hours of Sacking

AS Roma have sacked Daniele De Rossi after a winless start to the new season. The winless start included two 0-0 draws against Cagliari and Juventus and a defeat at the hands of Empoli.

De Rossi, the former Roma captain, was appointed as head coach in January to replace Jose Mourinho. His impressive performance during the second half of last season earned him a contract extension in June, extending his tenure through the 2026-27 season. However, the deal has now come to a premature end after a disappointing run of results in the new season.

“Daniele De Rossi has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the first team,” Roma said in a statement. “The club’s decision is made in the best interests of the team, to get back on the desired path as soon as possible at a time when the season is still in its early stages.”

De Rossi’s reign at Roma started brilliantly as they picked up 26 points out of the possible 33 in the first 11 matches. Their sixth-place finish last season earned them a spot in this season’s Europa League. They also advanced to the semi-finals of the Europa League, where they were eliminated by eventual champions Bayer Leverkusen.

AS Roma announces De Rossi’s replacement

Roma has now announced the arrival of Ivan Juric to the Italian capital on a short-term deal until the end of the 2024-25 season. According to the reports, there will be an option to extend the contract if Roma qualify for next year’s Champions League.

Juric has been a free agent since leaving Torino at the end of last season. His three-year tenure with the Granata was the longest period he has spent at a single club in his coaching career.

The Croatian spend his last four years of his playing career in Genoa before switching to a coaching role. He started his coaching career with lower league sides Mantova and Crotone, before returning to Genoa where he served as head coach on three separate occasions between 2016 and 2018.

He then spent two seasons at Hellas Verona between 2019 and 2021 and then made a move to Genoa. He led Genoa to two consecutive 10th-place finishes before finishing 9th last season.

Juric’s first assignment with AS Roma will be a home fixture against Udinese on Sunday, September 22.
