AC Milan have confirmed that head coach Stefano Piolo will depart the club at the end of this season. The Italian’s last game in charge of Rossoneri will be weekend’s Serie A fixture against Salernitana.
Piolo has been in charge of Milan for 182 games winning 108 with an impressive win percentage of 59.3%. During his time in San Siro he averaged 2 points per game and lifted the Scudetto in 2021-22 bringing back the old glory days at Milan. Piolo also helped Milan to end their seven-year absence from the Champions League in 2021 and reached the semifinals last season, losing to arch rivals Inter.
This season the 19 times Italian Champions will finish second in the table, way behind rivals Inter and had a blow par performance in the Champions League which saw them getting knocked out in the group stage. In the domestic cup they bowed out in the quarter final stage at the hands of Atalanta.
The club extended their heartfelt thanks to Pioli and his entire staff for unforgettable league title and establishing them back into European competitions. Piolo also expressed his gratitude to the club by thanking the owners, players, team and the fans.
What’s next for Pioli?
Pioli would be on the radar of many clubs across Europe. However Napoli and Bologna are the two leading clubs that are trying to secure the Italian’s signature. Last week Pioli denied any ongoing talks with Napoli but now that he is no longer Milan manager, it remains to be seen how the situation with Partenopei develops.
Thiago Motta has not renewed his contract with Bologna and is set to join Juventus this summer so they are also closely monitoring Piolo’s situation.
Milan’s Next Possible Managers?
According to a report, AC Milan already seem to have made a decision on their Pioli’s replacement and are looking to move in the ‘final steps’ of the negotiation. According to a report from Gianluca Di Marzio, Fonseca is set to be the next Milan coach and the Portuguese manager seems convinced with the offer.
However, things are far from done as Marseille, who are also interested in Fonseca, have still not given up on the Portuguese. Despite Milan offering less than what Marseille have to offer, the former Roma boss looks to be convinced with Rossoneri’s project.
