Mick Schumacher, son of seven-time Formula 1 champion Michael Schumacher, is being considered for a potential return to F1. He has recently become a contender for a seat at Kick Sauber, which is set to rebrand as Audi in 2026. Team principal Mattia Binotto has confirmed that Mick is a candidate for their 2025 driver lineup.

Schumacher, who last raced in Formula 1 with Haas, served as a reserve driver for Mercedes over the past two seasons. He was also considered for a seat at Alpine following Esteban Ocon’s move to Haas, where he even competed for the French manufacturer in the World Endurance Championship. Ultimately, though, Alpine chose to go with rookie Jack Doohan for the spot.

Audi Chief Mattia Binotto now has his eye on the young driver, aiming to bring him back into Formula 1. In an interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, Binotto provided insights about the young driver, stating, “We are certainly evaluating him [Mick Schumacher].”

“I met him and spoke to him. I have known him for a long time, having been part of the Ferrari Driver Academy. I know his strengths and advantages. He is one of the names we have in mind.”

Binotto also revealed that the team is in no rush to make a call on their driver lineups given that most of the teams have confirmed their lineups for the upcoming season.

“We can afford the luxury of not rushing, since all the other teams have decided their line-ups. There are two essential options: on the one hand, experience to set us on the growth path. On the other is a young, talented driver who can accompany us on the path to the top,” Binotto added.

As Sauber gears up for a complete takeover by Audi in 2026, the German automaker is concentrating on building a competitive team. If Schumacher joins Sauber, he will partner with Nico Hulkenberg, who is set to leave Haas at the end of the 2024 season. The 37-year-old German driver will occupy one of the two seats next year.

Binotto emphasized the importance of long-term thinking, noting that the Audi project represents a significant challenge that will require considerable time to come to fruition.

When questioned about the timeline for Audi to achieve success in F1, he stated, “Other teams have spent years climbing to the top. We expect to be in the title fight around 2030″

As Audi gears up to enter F1, prioritizing long-term development is essential. With experienced figures like Mattia Binotto leading the charge and emerging talents like Mick Schumacher in consideration, the German automaker is dedicated to creating a competitive roster capable of fighting for championships in the years ahead.
