Sri Lanka made an embarrassing start in the T20 World Cup 2024’s first major contest. In the fourth match of the tournament, on June 03, 2024 , they were bundled out for only 77 runs in 19.1 overs against South Africa at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York during their T20 World Cup 2024 opening match.
Sri Lanka skipper Wanindu Hasaranga won the toss and elected to bat, shot themselves at their own foot.
South Africa started their brilliant campaign with a 6-wicket win. Chasing a trivial 78-run target, David Miller scored the winning runs for the Proteas, clinching the win with 22 balls to spare. The Lankan bowlers tried to fight back but the batters claimed their stead in the field. Heinrich Klaasen remained unbeaten on 19, while Quinton de Kock also scored 20.
The Sri Lankan batters failed to put up any fight on scratchy surface.
This was the 14th-lowest score ever registered in the history of the T20 World Cups.
