Ravichandran Ashwin suddenly announced his retirement from all three game formats during the third test match of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. This sudden announcement shocked cricket fans all across the globe as he retired with three test matches remaining. His last match was the second test match between India and Australia in Adelaide.
It is worth mentioning here that Ashwin has taken 765 international wickets and is the second-highest wicket-taker for India at the highest level, after Anil Kumble. Ashwin has taken 537 wickets in Tests, 156 in ODIs, and 72 in T20Is. He also scored 4394 runs with 6 centuries and 15 fifties.
Now finally Ashwin has revealed the reason behind his retirement after glittering a 14-year career amidst the ongoing BGT 2024-2025.
“I’ve never been a person who holds onto things, I’ve never felt insecure in life,” he said on Sky Sports. “I don’t believe what is mine today is going to be mine tomorrow. That has probably been one of my elevating factors all these years.”
“I always wanted to leave things behind as nonchalantly as I can because I do not believe in people celebrating me, I don’t believe in the attention we get sometimes in India. It is the game that always stood ahead of me, all the time,” he added.
Ashwin will be remembered as one of the best all-rounders to wear the Indian jersey.
