On June 21, registering first points in Super 8, Australia achieved a commendable feat against Bangladesh at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound Antigua.

Sealing a 28 run win, Australia gave tough time to Bangladesh, winning via DLS method. Australia won the toss and opted to bowl.

Captain Mitchell Starc removed Tanzid Hasan for a duck, in the first over. Bangladesh then had Litton Das and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto trying to build a partnership. But Adam Zampa removed Litton at 16 breaking the bond. Maxwell took the wicket of Rishad Hossain (2).

Bangladesh’s downfall came as Pat Cummins completed his hat-trick in the 20th over. The pacer took wickets off consecutive balls in the end of the 18th over. First Mahmudullah (2), tried to pull a shot but was hit at the stumps. Next he had Mahedi Hasan (0), caught by Zampa.

Returning in the final over, removed Towhid Hridoy (40), Cummins claimed the hat-trick. It was only the second instance of an Australian bowler picking up a hat-trick in a T20 World Cup.

Bangladesh was restricted at 140/8 in 20 overs.

In his last T20 World Cup match, David Warner gave an unbeaten half century (53 not out off 35 balls). He helped Australia to make a winning start at Super 8. Openers Travis Head (31) and Warner raced to 60/0 before rain halted the show.

As the match resumed, Aussies lost bit of a momentum as they lost two wickets to Rishad Hossain (2/23 in 3 overs). He removed Head and Mitchell Marsh (1) in quick succession.

Warner was unbeaten as he contributed a significant 50 to the score. Interrupting the play for second time, rain stopped the match. Australia was 100/2 in 11.2 overs, 28 runs ahead of the DLS par score of 72.

The game didn’t end in a proper way as a result of rain but Australia had enough in the tank by then to get the two points by DLS method.

Positing themselves first on the Super 8 points table, India had earlier beaten Afghanistan by 47 runs. Australia currently occupies second place on the table, behind India on Net Run Rate.
