The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Saturday the implementation of an increased match fee for all players participating in the Indian Premier League (IPL). This decision is aimed at providing financial clarity and equity among players throughout the tournament.

Players in IPL 2025 are set to benefit from a new match fee of Rs. 7.5 lakh per game, as announced by the BCCI. This fee will be in addition to the players’ existing contracts, providing a significant earnings boost throughout the season. Each franchise is expected to allocate around Rs. 12.60 crore for match fees over the tournament. BCCI secretary Jay Shah confirmed this initiative via X. With the new fee structure, a player who competes in all 14 league matches will earn an additional Rs 1.05 crore, in addition to their contracted salary.

“In a historic move to celebrate consistency and champion outstanding performances in the #IPL, we are thrilled to introduce a match fee of INR 7.5 lakhs per game for our cricketers! A cricketer playing all league matches in a season will get Rs. 1.05 crores in addition to his contracted amount,” Jay Shah posted.

Each franchise will allocate INR 12.60 crores as match fees for the season! This is a new era for the #IPL and our players!”  he added.

The new IPL per-match fee exceeds the amount paid for First-Class cricket by approximately 78%, highlighting the financial disparity between different formats of the game. In 2021, the BCCI updated the match fee for First-Class matches to Rs. 40,000 for the first 20 matches, increasing to Rs. 50,000 for the next 21 to 40 matches, and reaching Rs. 60,000 for those exceeding 40 matches. This significant increase in the IPL fee structure reflects the league’s growing commercial success and its role in enhancing player earnings.

The IPL has reportedly communicated to franchisees the importance of providing financial incentives to players, especially given the increased revenues teams are generating. This proposal aims to boost the earnings of players who were signed at or near their base price during the auction but have seen their value rise since then. The league’s intent is to ensure that these players benefit financially as their contributions to their respective teams have grown over time.

BCCI has also made some significant changes to the upcoming auction including six retentions, the return of the Right to Match Card, a new rule for uncapped players, and much more.
