Bangladesh Script Historic Win Against Pakistan

Bangladesh created history as they defeated Pakistan by six wickets on Day 5 of the second Test in Rawalpindi. Chasing 185, the Bangla Tigers lost a few early wickets, but a solid partnership between skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto (38) and Mominul Haque (34) kept them on track.

Zakir Hasan set the tone for Bangladesh’s successful chase with a brisk 40 off just 39 balls, effectively dashing any hopes of a Pakistani comeback. The 26-year-old’s knock, featuring three fours and two sixes, came during a 58-run opening partnership with Shadman Islam. The victory was sealed, fittingly, with a cover drive off Abrar Ahmed by Shakib Al Hasan, who partnered with Mushfiqur Rahim in an unbeaten 32-run stand for the fifth wicket.

Bangladesh skipper Najmul Shanto was speechless after the six-wicket win in Rawalpindi. “This means so much; it’s hard to put into words. I’m really happy. We came here aiming to win, and I’m thrilled with how everyone fulfilled their roles.”

This win not only gave Bangladesh a 2-0 sweep in the series but also marked the first time they completed a clean sweep against an Asian side on their home turf. With this victory, Bangladesh has also now triumphed over two of the nine Test-playing nations, including Pakistan and the West Indies, showcasing their growing presence and influence in the cricketing world.

Pakistan’s home woes continue

A 2-0 loss to Bangladesh prolonged Pakistan’s winless run in home Tests to ten matches. Test captain Shan Masood experienced another clean sweep, having previously lost 3-0 to Australia. Pakistan’s most recent home victory came in December 2021 against South Africa in Rawalpindi.
Masood was understandably disappointed and voiced his concern about the team’s recurring failures. “Extremely disappointed, we were excited for the home season. The story has been the same as Australia, we have not learned our lessons. We thought we were playing good cricket in Australia but not doing the job, that’s something we need to work on,” Masood said.

“It has happened 4 times in my tenure that we have left the team back into the contest when we were dominating. I think Test cricket demands something else in terms of fitness,” he added.

Pakistan’s next home assignment is in the form of a 3-match test series against England. The first test match will be played at Multan Cricket Stadium from 7 to 11 October.
