The top-ranked ODI batsman in the world is on the verge of becoming the quickest player to score 6,000 runs in the format.
Hashim Amla of South Africa currently holds the record, achieving 6,000 runs in 123 innings. Babar Azam, with 5,957 runs from 120 innings, is close to breaking this impressive record. Indian batting legend Virat Kohli reached the 6,000-run mark in 136 innings.
Babar’s recent performance in the ODI series against South Africa where he scored a crucial 73 runs off 95 balls in the second ODI and he scored 52 runs in the third and final ODI against South Africa.
He also broke the record for most 50s against SENA countries in ODIs (39), the previous record was held by Indian legendary captain MS Dhoni (38).
With 19 ODI centuries to his credit, Babar Azam is also getting closer to Saeed Anwar’s record for the most centuries by a Pakistani batsman. The legendary left-handed Anwar scored 20 ODI centuries for Pakistan in his career.
However, Babar had a dry run with bat as he scored his last ODI century against Nepal in the opening match of the Asia Cup 2023 in Multan, despite his rough patch Babar is still averaging over 56.73 in the ODI and already spent 1278 days as No.1 ODI batsman and he’ll aiming to break the record of Sir Viv Richards (1748) days.
Pakistan’s former captain Babar Azam also holds a record for the fastest 5000 ODI runs, he achieved this feat in 97 innings during a game against New Zealand in Karachi.
Pakistan will play a tri-series with New Zealand and South Africa in Pakistan, after the test series against South Africa.
