Kolkata Knight Riders beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 8 wickets to secure the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) title at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai.

Choosing to bat first backfired for Sunrisers Hyderabad, who were hoping to add to their solitary IPL title in 2016. Mitchell Starc cleaned up Abhishek Sharma on the fifth ball of the match and by the end of the second over Travis Head was sent back Vaibhav Arora.

Wickets kept tumbling with Rahul Tripathi and Nitish Reddy quickly dismissed leaving SRH reeling at 47/4. Aiden Markram scored 20, his dismissal by Andre Russell left SRH at 62/5 and SRH never recovered.

Captain Pat Cummins’ 24 runs of 19 balls helped salvage some pride for SRH as KKR choked their opponents and restricted them to 113 all out inside 18.3 overs.

In response, KKR lost Sunil Narine in the second over, but Venkatesh Iyer went on a rampage and was steadily accompanied by Rahmanullah Gurbaz. Iyer scored a 50 and Gurbaz scored 39 before being dismissed towards the end. Captain Shreyas Iyer walked in and ensured no further damage as KKR swept aside SRH with 8 wickets in hand to win the IPL 2024 edition.

How many times have KKR won the IPL after their 2024 triumph?

With this win, Kolkata Knight Riders became three-time IPL champions. They added to their previous triumphs in 2012 and 2014, both coming under the current head coach Gautam Gambhir’s captaincy.

In 2012 they beat Chennai Super Kings by 5 wickets while chasing 191 and in 2014 they overcame Kings XI Punjab by chasing down 200 runs with 3 wickets and 3 balls to spare.

They are now the third most successful franchise in IPL history behind, Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians who have won five titles each.

This time led by Shreyas Iyer, KKR have won the IPL title after a decade’s wait. They topped the table in the league phase and beat SRH in the first Qualifier earlier. This win also marks the third IPL title for Gautam Gambhir as a player and coach.
