French Open Day 8 Recap: Swiatek’s Double Baggle, Sinner Fights Back and Alcaraz Sets Up Tsitsipas Clash

Day 8 of 2024 French Open saw the likes of Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Iga Swiatek safely progressing to the next round as the sun finally shone bright at the Rolland-Garros.

Stefanos Tstisipas was the first to reach the last 8 stage after he came from a set down to beat Matteo Arnaldi 3-6, 7-6, 6-2, 6-2. The Greek would now face Carlos Alcaraz in the quarter final who defeated Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada in striaght sets 6-3, 6-3, 6-1. World no. 2 Jack Sinner also came from a set down to beat Corentin Moutet 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-1and10th seed Grigor Dimitrov defeated 8th seed Hubert Hurkacz 7-6, 6-4, 7-6.

Stefanos Tstisipas was also involved in Men’s Doubles first round match along with his brother Petros Tsitsipas. The Greek duo overcame Denys Molchanov and John-Patrick Smith 7-6, 6-4.

World no 1 Iga Swiatek made light work of Anastasia Potapova defeating the Russian 6-0, 6-0. Coco Gauff hardly broke sweat as she overcame Elisabetta Cocciaretto 6-1, 6-2. Ons Jabeur of Tunisia also reached the final 8 stage defeating Clara Tauson of Denmark 6-4, 6-4. Czech 5th seed Marketa Vondrousova beat Serbian qualifier Olga Danilovic 6-4, 6-2.

In the Women’s doubles, World no.1 duo of Su-Wei Hsieh and Elise Mertens were beaten in second round by Emma Navarro and Diana Shnaider in striaght sets 2-6, 4-6.

French Open Day 9 Preview:

On Day 9, World no. 1 Novak Djokovic will face Francisco Cerundolo on Court Philippe-Chatrier and Alexander Zverev will play Holger Rune in the night session at the same venue. Daniil Medvedev and Alex de Minaur will meet on Court Suzanne-Lenglen.

In Women’s matches, Court Philippe-Chatrier will host Elina Svitolina vs. Elena Rybakina and Aryna Sabalenka vs. Emma Navarro. Elina Avanesyan will play Jasmine Paolini on Court Suzanne-Lenglen. Varvara Gracheva and Mirra Andreeva will face off at the same venue followed by Taylor Fritz vs. Casper Ruud.
